How to use the Email Drafter agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Email Drafter skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent to write professional emails in your own style. It looks at how you usually write to a recipient, applies that greeting, structure and sign-off to a new draft, and saves the result as a markdown file for you to review. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install this one, how to ask for drafts, and where its limits are.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the email-drafter skill ZIP from this page and unzip it so that SKILL.md is available.
  2. 2Place the skill folder. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
  3. 3Or upload it in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
  4. 4Connect WorkIQ (optional). Connect the WorkIQ MCP tool to Microsoft 365 / Outlook so the agent can check your prior emails for tone.
  5. 5Ask for a draft. Describe the recipient, purpose and key points in plain language, such as 'Draft an email to Sarah about the project timeline'.
  6. 6Review and refine. Read the draft and its tone note, then ask for edits until you are happy with it.
  7. 7Send it yourself. Open the saved markdown file in outputs/<year>/<month>/, copy the text into your mail client, and send it manually.

What is an agent skill and what does Email Drafter do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file tells an AI agent when a task applies and how to carry it out. When a request matches the skill's description, the agent follows its steps.

Email Drafter is triggered by requests such as draft email, write email, compose email, reply email, follow-up email, and analyze email tone. It gathers the recipient, purpose and key points, checks prior correspondence where it can, drafts the message, and saves it to outputs/<year>/<month>/. It never sends email.

Install the Email Drafter skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. The package contains SKILL.md. Then choose one of the following locations.

For all of your projects, unzip the folder into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

The skill recommends a connected WorkIQ MCP tool for Microsoft 365 / Outlook. With WorkIQ available, the agent pulls 3 to 5 recent sent emails to the same or similar recipients and identifies greeting style, structure, sign-off, formality and language.

WorkIQ is optional. Without it, the skill still works, but it uses professional defaults and says the tone was inferred rather than matched to you.

How to trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Describe the email in plain language and include the recipient, the topic and the points you want covered. If you give all of this upfront, the agent drafts straight away. Otherwise it asks up to three clarifying questions.

The skill also activates when you say "draft email" or "write email".

  • Draft an email to [person] about [topic]
  • Write a follow-up email to [customer] regarding [project]
  • Reply to [person]'s email about [subject]
  • Compose a proposal email for [initiative]
  • Analyze my email tone with [recipient]

Examples of prompts and output

A useful prompt names the recipient, the purpose and the points to cover. The agent replies with the draft, a short note on the tone it applied, and then makes changes as you ask. When you are satisfied, it saves the final file.

Saved files use a descriptive name, for example 2026-03-26-email-acme-followup.md, inside outputs/<year>/<month>/.

  • "Draft an email to Sarah about the project timeline"
  • "Write a follow-up to the customer about their migration questions"
  • "Reply to John's email — agree with his approach but suggest we add monitoring"
  • "Analyze my email tone with the Acme team"

What the skill needs and safety notes

The skill needs a Markdown-capable workspace where the agent can write files to outputs/<year>/<month>/. WorkIQ connected to Microsoft 365 is recommended. The skill runs no scripts and does use the network, because WorkIQ reads your mail.

Because it reads prior sent mail to infer style, drafts can accidentally refer to unrelated threads or confidential details. The skill is instructed to avoid sensitive information from unrelated threads, but you should still review each draft before sending.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: yes (through WorkIQ, when connected)
  • Sends email: never; you send drafts yourself

Tips for better drafts

Give the agent specific points rather than a topic alone. Name the recipient so it can find prior correspondence. Iterate in the chat: ask for a shorter version, a different sign-off, or a change of language, and the agent will apply it before saving.

  • Name the recipient exactly so WorkIQ can find past emails
  • Ask for changes in the same conversation before the final save
  • Check any reference to earlier threads before you send

What people use it for

  • Following up with a customer after a meeting, in the same tone you already use with them
  • Writing status updates to a project team with bullet points for multi-point progress
  • Drafting proposal emails for new initiatives that include structured lists
  • Replying to a colleague's email while agreeing with part of it and adding a suggestion
  • Reviewing how formal or casual your emails to a particular team tend to be

Frequently asked questions

Is the Email Drafter skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence, as stated on this page. Check the licence file in the repository for the full terms. Any WorkIQ or Microsoft 365 access you need is separate and depends on your own subscriptions.

Does Email Drafter send emails for me?

No. The skill is written never to send email. It saves each draft as a markdown file so you can review it and send it yourself.

Do I need Microsoft 365 or WorkIQ to use it?

No, but WorkIQ connected to Microsoft 365 / Outlook is recommended. Without it, the skill still drafts emails using professional defaults and notes that the tone was inferred.

Where do I install the Email Drafter skill?

Unzip the downloaded ZIP into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Why does the skill need network access?

It uses WorkIQ to read a few of your recent sent emails to the recipient so it can match your greeting, structure and sign-off. The skill runs no scripts.

How is Email Drafter different from a generic AI email writer?

It is designed to mirror how you write to a specific person when WorkIQ is connected, rather than producing generic text. It also saves drafts in your workspace for review. If you need automatic sending, this skill is not designed for that.

Our verdict

Email Drafter suits professionals who send many routine follow-ups, status updates or proposals from Outlook or Microsoft 365 and want drafts that sound like them. It is a poor fit for fully automated sending, for sensitive or regulated correspondence without careful review, or for anyone who will not connect WorkIQ and wants personalised tone matching.
