How to use the E-commerce Data Extraction agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The apify-ecommerce skill gives an AI agent a guided workflow for collecting product data, prices, stock status, customer reviews and seller listings from online stores such as Amazon, Walmart and Google Shopping. It is written for pricing analysts, brand managers and brand protection teams who need this data regularly, not for one-off price checks. By the end of this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for data in plain language and what you need in place first.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Place the apify-ecommerce folder in ~/.claude/skills/ or your project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  2. 2Add your Apify token. Create or edit ~/.claude/.env and add APIFY_TOKEN with your Apify API token.
  3. 3Confirm Node.js 20.6 or newer. Check that your installed Node.js version is 20.6 or higher, since the skill relies on native --env-file support.
  4. 4Ask for the data in plain language. Describe the products, marketplace, data type and format you want, such as prices on Amazon saved as CSV.
  5. 5Review the configured input. Let the agent show the Actor input it builds, so you can confirm the URLs, keywords and limits before the script runs.
  6. 6Choose format and filename. Answer the agent's question about output format and filename, for example CSV or JSON with a date-prefixed name.
  7. 7Summarise the results. Ask the agent to summarise the findings, such as price range, top brands or recurring complaints in reviews.

What an agent skill is and what this one does

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md instruction file and any supporting files, which an AI agent loads when a request matches the skill's description. This skill tells the agent how to extract e-commerce data through Apify's E-commerce Scraping Tool, rather than the agent visiting pages itself.

The skill follows a five-step progress list: select a workflow and data source, configure the Actor input, ask your preferences for format and filename, run the extraction script, and summarise the results.

  • Workflow 1, Products & Pricing: product details, prices and stock status from product URLs, category URLs or keyword searches.
  • Workflow 2, Reviews: customer reviews from product pages or keyword searches, with sort options.
  • Workflow 3, Sellers: seller discovery through Google Shopping, useful for finding unauthorised resellers.

Install the apify-ecommerce skill

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. For a personal install, place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ so it becomes ~/.claude/skills/apify-ecommerce. For a single project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

Alternatively, in the Claude apps go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill there.

  • Personal install path: ~/.claude/skills/apify-ecommerce
  • Project install path: .claude/skills/apify-ecommerce inside your project
  • Check that SKILL.md sits directly inside the apify-ecommerce folder.

Set up your Apify token and Node.js

The skill reads your Apify API token from a .env file at ~/.claude/.env. Add a line with APIFY_TOKEN and your token value. The skill also needs Node.js 20.6 or newer, because it uses Node's native --env-file support.

Scraping runs through your own Apify account, and the Apify E-commerce Scraping Tool Actors are paid usage on Apify. Check Apify's pricing before running large jobs.

  • Create an Apify account and generate an API token.
  • Store it as APIFY_TOKEN in ~/.claude/.env.
  • Confirm your Node.js version is 20.6 or newer.
APIFY_TOKEN=your_token_here

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need to name the skill. Describe the data you want in plain language, and mention the store and the output you need. The agent will choose the workflow that fits.

Good requests name the product or search term, the marketplace, the data type and the format. For example, ask for prices across two Amazon regions, or for reviews sorted by most recent, saved as CSV.

  • "Track current prices for this product on Amazon and Walmart and save a CSV."
  • "Pull the last 200 most recent reviews for this Amazon product and summarise the complaints about defects."
  • "Find sellers of Nike Air Max 90 on Google Shopping in the US."

Understand the inputs and outputs

Products & Pricing accepts product URLs in the detailsUrls field, category URLs in listingUrls, or a keyword with a list of marketplaces. Reviews uses reviewListingUrls or keywordReviews. The agent builds these inputs for you, but you can check them before the script runs.

Product output includes name, url, offers.price, offers.priceCurrency, brand and image, plus seller and stock information when additionalProperties is true. Currency can differ between results even for US searches, because prices reflect different seller regions.

  • Review sort options: Most recent, Most relevant, Most helpful, Highest rated, Lowest rated.
  • "Lowest rated" may not work consistently across all marketplaces, so collect a sample and filter by rating afterwards.
  • Seller discovery uses Google Shopping; direct seller profile URLs are not reliably supported.
node --env-file="$HOME/.claude/.env" "$SKILL_PATH/reference/scripts/run_actor.js" \ --actor "apify/e-commerce-scraping-tool" \ --input 'JSON_INPUT' \ --output YYYY-MM-DD_filename.csv \ --format csv

Safety notes: scripts and network access

This skill runs a bundled Node.js script, reference/scripts/run_actor.js, and uses the network to call Apify. Its files are package.json, run_actor.js and SKILL.md. Review the script before installing if you need to confirm what runs on your machine.

The skill does not address legal or privacy questions. Avoid collecting personal data about individual reviewers or sellers, which may breach platform terms or privacy law. The skill also warns that more reviews alone do not guarantee valid sentiment, so treat results as a sample, not a representative study.

  • The script runs locally and sends requests through Apify using your token.
  • Keep your APIFY_TOKEN private and out of shared project folders.
  • Check each marketplace's terms before scraping at scale.

What people use it for

  • A pricing analyst tracks competitor prices for a set of product URLs across Amazon regions and checks for MAP violations.
  • A brand manager pulls recent Amazon reviews and looks for recurring words such as defect, broke or returned.
  • A brand protection team searches Google Shopping for a product name to find sellers that may be unauthorised resellers.
  • A market researcher runs a keyword search for a product category and exports the results to CSV for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is the apify-ecommerce skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. The scraping itself runs on Apify through your own account, and the E-commerce Scraping Tool Actors are paid usage on Apify, so you pay for the scraping you run.

What do I need before installing it?

You need an Apify account with an API token stored as APIFY_TOKEN in ~/.claude/.env, and Node.js 20.6 or newer. The skill then runs its bundled Node.js script to call the Apify Actor.

Where do I install an agent skill?

Unzip the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can also upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Which websites does it support?

The source lists Amazon across 20+ regions, Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, several European retailers such as Allegro, Alza, Kaufland and Cdiscount, IKEA regional sites, and Google Shopping for seller discovery.

Why are my results in different currencies?

Prices reflect different seller regions, so currency can vary in results even for US searches. Check the offers.priceCurrency field for each item before comparing prices.

Can I use this for a one-off price check?

It is more work than needed for a single check. Setting up an Apify account and token takes longer than visiting the product page, so the skill suits repeated or larger-scale collection.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you regularly need product, price, review or seller data from supported stores and are comfortable setting up an Apify account and Node.js. Pick something else for one-off price checks, for collecting personal data about individual reviewers or sellers, or if you need statistically representative samples, since the skill does not solve those problems.
