How to use the Claude Code Self-Assessment agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Self-Assessment skill turns Claude Code into an interactive coach. It asks you a short multiple-choice quiz about Claude Code features, scores your answers, and tells you which areas you have not tried yet. This guide is for anyone new to agent skills or Claude Code who wants to install the skill, trigger it and get a learning path out of the result.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the self-assessment skill ZIP from this page.
- 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
- 4Ask for an assessment. Say something like "assess my level" or "where should I start" in Claude Code.
- 5Choose a mode. Pick Quick Assessment or Deep Assessment from the options the agent shows.
- 6Answer the questions. Select every item you have actually done in each multiple-choice question.
- 7Review your gaps and path. Read your level or per-topic scores, then follow the prioritized next steps.
What the Self-Assessment skill does
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file and optional supporting files. When you install it, Claude Code can load its instructions and follow them when your request matches the skill's description. This skill covers 10 feature areas of Claude Code: slash commands, memory, skills, hooks, MCP servers, subagents, checkpoints, advanced features, plugins and the command-line interface.
You choose between a Quick Assessment (2 multi-select questions, about 2 minutes, giving an overall level of Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced) and a Deep Assessment (5 rounds, about 5 minutes, giving per-topic scores). The agent then lists the areas you have not checked and gives you a prioritized list of next steps.
- Quick mode: overall level plus a learning path
- Deep mode: per-topic scores (None / Basic / Proficient), gap analysis and a learning path with exercises
Install the Self-Assessment skill
Download the ZIP for the self-assessment skill from this page. Then choose one of the two install locations below.
For a personal install that works in every project, unzip the folder into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/self-assessment/
- Project only: .claude/skills/self-assessment/ inside your project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
Trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need a slash command. The skill is triggered by what you ask. Phrases from its description include "assess my level", "take the quiz", "find my level", "where should I start", "what should I learn next", "check my skills", "skill check" and "level up".
The skill uses the AskUserQuestion interactive prompt to show you options, so answer by selecting choices rather than typing long replies.
- "Assess my level with Claude Code."
- "Where should I start with Claude Code?"
- "What should I learn next in Claude Code?"
- "Take the quiz and find my level."
What the quiz covers and how scoring works
The Quick Assessment asks about basic CLI use, CLAUDE.md memory, slash commands, custom commands and skills, MCP servers, hooks, subagents and print mode. Each checked item counts as one point, so the total out of 8 maps to Level 1 (0-2), Level 2 (3-5) or Level 3 (6-8).
The Deep Assessment covers slash commands and memory, skills and hooks, MCP and subagents, checkpoints and advanced features, and plugins and CLI. Each area is scored separately so you can see where your gaps are.
- Quick: 8 items, 3 levels
- Deep: 5 rounds across 10 feature areas
Safety notes and what the skill needs
The skill requires Claude Code with the AskUserQuestion interactive prompt available. According to its documentation it does not run scripts and does not use the network. It works by asking questions and producing text.
Remember that the results depend on your own answers. Choosing an option you have not really used will inflate your score, so answer honestly if you want a useful learning path.
- Runs scripts: no
- Uses network: no
- Needs: Claude Code with AskUserQuestion available
Tips for getting the most from the assessment
Run the Deep Assessment once you are comfortable with the basics, because it gives a more precise picture. Use the learning path as a checklist and retake the assessment after you have practised the suggested items.
- Pick Quick first if you are short on time
- Ask for the learning path again after you learn a new feature
- Use the output as a starting point for team onboarding
What people use it for
- A new Claude Code user who wants to know which features to learn first.
- A daily developer who wants to find features they have never tried, such as hooks or subagents.
- A team lead running a structured skill check before onboarding new engineers.
