How to use the Audience Analysis with Apify agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Audience Analysis with Apify skill is a set of instructions and a small script that lets an AI agent pick an Apify scraper (called an Actor), run it against public account data on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or TikTok, and summarise the results. It is aimed at creators, brand teams and analysts who want a rough picture of who engages with public content. By the end of this guide you will know how to install the skill, how to phrase a request so the agent uses it, and what to check before a paid run.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it to get the apify-audience-analysis folder.
- 2Place it in the skills folder. Move the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or .claude/skills/ inside a project. Or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 3Create the .env file. Add APIFY_TOKEN=your_token to a local .env file in the folder where you run commands. Keep it private.
- 4Make a natural request. Describe the platform, the public account or post, and the audience question you want answered.
- 5Answer the agent's questions. Choose quick answer, CSV or JSON, and a result count. Confirm the Actor, scope and pricing before approving the run.
- 6Review the summary. Check the number of results, the file location, the stated limits and the suggested next steps before drawing conclusions.
What an agent skill is and what this one does
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file of instructions, plus optional scripts and reference files, that an AI agent loads when a task matches its description. This skill's description covers audience demographics, preferences, behaviour patterns and engagement quality across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok.
Once installed, the agent follows a fixed workflow: it selects an Actor suited to the platform, checks the Actor's input schema, asks you for output format and result count, runs the bundled runner script, and then reports the number of results, the file location if one was saved, key observations and suggested next steps.
- Follower profiles, engagement and comment activity on public accounts or posts
- Quick answers shown in chat, or bounded CSV or JSON files saved locally
- Written summary of patterns, with stated limits
Install the skill from the ZIP
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. For a personal install, place the skill folder inside ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, place it inside that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
If you use the Claude apps instead, upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
Set up your Apify token and Node.js
The skill needs Node.js 20.6 or newer, because the runner uses Node's native --env-file support. It also needs an Apify account and API token. Store the token in a local .env file in the folder where you run the command, using the variable name APIFY_TOKEN.
Keep the .env file private and out of version control. The skill's instructions say to configure the token locally and not paste it into chat or into command arguments.
- Node.js 20.6 or newer
- An Apify account and API token
- A .env file containing APIFY_TOKEN=your_token
APIFY_TOKEN=your_tokenTrigger the skill with a natural request
You do not need to type the skill name. Describe the audience question you want answered and name the platform. The skill is written to activate for audience demographics, engagement patterns and follower behaviour on the four supported platforms.
The agent will then ask how you want the results: a quick answer in chat, a CSV, or a JSON file, and how many results you want. Answer these questions before any run starts.
- "Use the audience analysis skill to look at who comments on the public posts of [account] on Instagram."
- "Compare engagement quality on recent public TikTok videos from [account] against its YouTube channel."
- "Give me a quick answer on the top commenters on this public YouTube video, no file."
Choose a platform and Actor
The skill maps each need to a specific Apify Actor. For example, Instagram profile data uses apify/instagram-profile-scraper, YouTube comment analysis uses streamers/youtube-comments-scraper, and TikTok follower lists use clockworks/tiktok-followers-scraper. The mapping is a list of candidates, so the agent is instructed to confirm each Actor's current schema before running it.
You can ask the agent which Actor it plans to use and why. Check that the choice matches the question before approving a run.
- Facebook: followers, likes, Reels viewers, comments, post engagement
- Instagram: profiles, location-based search, tagged posts, comments, follower counts
- YouTube: comment feedback and channel data
- TikTok: followers, profiles, comments
Run the script and read the output
The agent runs reference/scripts/run_actor.js with your chosen Actor ID and a JSON input. Without --output, results are shown in chat. With --output and --format set to csv or json, the script writes a file. Output file names must be new paths. The skill's examples use a date prefix such as YYYY-MM-DD in the name.
Note that --max-items limits only the downloaded output, with a default of 1000. It does not cap the work the Actor does on Apify or what you are billed. Quick answers fetch at most five records.
- Quick answer: no --output flag, at most five records
- CSV: --format csv with a new --output path
- JSON: --format json with a new --output path
node --env-file=.env "<resolved-skill-directory>/reference/scripts/run_actor.js" \
--actor "ACTOR_ID" \
--input 'JSON_INPUT' \
--output YYYY-MM-DD_OUTPUT_FILE.csv \
--format csvRead the results with care
Public followers, comments and profile counts are partial samples, not verified viewer demographics. The skill tells the agent to distinguish observed interactions from unique people, bots and actual reach, and to report the platform, date window, missing fields and sample size before comparing segments.
The skill also instructs the agent not to infer sensitive traits from names, photos or handles, and to minimise or redact personal fields before sharing results.
- Treat outputs as samples, not a census of your audience
- Report sample size and missing fields alongside any comparison
- Do not use the output to profile individuals
What people use it for
- Comparing comment activity on public Instagram posts from a brand and a competitor
- Checking which public YouTube videos draw the most comment feedback
- Exporting a bounded CSV of public TikTok follower profiles for a summary report
- Reviewing engagement quality on recent Facebook posts before a campaign
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the apify-audience-analysis skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need to run it?
You need Node.js 20.6 or newer, an Apify account and API token stored as APIFY_TOKEN in a local .env file, and access to an Apify connector or Apify Console to check Actor schemas. Running Actors is paid, and costs depend on the Actor you choose.
Is the Audience Analysis skill free?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. Apify Actor usage is separate and is paid, so check the pricing of the chosen Actor before running it.
Can it analyse private groups or private accounts?
No. The skill says not to collect private group data and to respect source terms and access controls. It is intended for public data.
Does this give me verified demographics of my audience?
No. The skill states that public followers, comments and profile counts are partial samples, not verified viewer demographics. It is designed to give a rough picture.
Why did my run cost more than the row limit suggested?
The --max-items option only limits the downloaded output, defaulting to 1000. It does not cap Actor work or billing, so check the Actor's pricing and start with a small input limit.

Our verdict
This skill suits creators and marketers who want a structured, summarised view of public engagement across Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Facebook, and who already have an Apify account. It is a poor fit if you need verified demographics, private or non-public data, or a tightly capped budget without checking Actor pricing first.
