What it does

Once installed, the agent can open a web link and get back the readable text of the page, with ads, menus and styling stripped out. This is handy when you want the agent to read API docs, blog posts, research announcements or GitHub READMEs. The full URL is sent to a third-party service, Jina Reader (r.jina.ai), which fetches and converts the page, and results may be a cached copy rather than live data.

Great for

  • Developers who want the agent to read API documentation or library docs
  • Analysts reading research reports, announcements or articles
  • Students summarising online articles or project READMEs

Skip it if

  • Pages behind logins or containing private/internal addresses, because the URL is forwarded to an external service (r.jina.ai) and could leak sensitive information
  • Situations needing guaranteed live data, since results may come from a cache unless no_cache is set
  • Heavily dynamic single-page apps, which may return only skeleton HTML with little usable content

Try asking

  • “Read the API documentation at this link and list the endpoints for me”
  • “Summarise this technical article: https://blog.example.com/quantitative-trading-guide”
  • “Open the GitHub README for PaddleOCR and explain how to install it”
  • “Fetch the latest announcement from this page and pull out the key dates”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Web Page ReaderInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    web-reader.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip web-reader.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip web-reader.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Never include tokens, passwords or internal URLs in the link you give the agent, since the full URL is sent to a third party.
  • If the content looks outdated, ask the agent to re-fetch with a fresh (no-cache) read, but only when truly needed.
  • Long pages are truncated at about 8000 characters, so ask for specific sections if the answer seems incomplete.
