What it does

When installed, the agent works as a careful reviewer looking for code that makes a project harder to maintain without providing value: dead code, duplicate state, redundant APIs or layers, abstractions nobody owns, and outdated compatibility code. In a read-only survey mode it traces how each suspect piece is reached and reports ranked evidence without changing anything. In a change mode, only when you explicitly ask, it removes or merges code within the scope you authorize and then reports which checks passed. It is explicitly instructed to keep security, authorization, data-loss protection, and stored-format compatibility intact, and to treat a justified codebase as a valid outcome.

Great for

  • Maintainers of a mature codebase who suspect accumulated dead code or redundant layers
  • Teams wanting an evidence-based list of simplification candidates before deciding what to cut
  • Developers who want a targeted cleanup of one subsystem with explicit approval for each deletion

Skip it if

  • General code review or style cleanup, which the skill says it should not be used for (risk: wasted effort on the wrong task)
  • Change mode on code with weak test coverage, because the skill itself notes a narrow green check does not prove runtime behaviour (risk: silent breakage)
  • Performance tuning or onboarding documentation, which are explicitly out of scope

Try asking

  • “Run a simplification audit of the payments module and rank the dead or duplicate code you find, without changing anything.”
  • “Find ownerless abstractions and redundant API wrappers in src/services and explain what depends on each.”
  • “Consolidate the duplicate state handling in the checkout flow and validate that the surviving behaviour still works.”
  • “代码简化: review this repository for accidental complexity and list candidates with confidence levels.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Simplify Codebase AuditInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 7 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    simplify-codebase.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip simplify-codebase.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip simplify-codebase.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start in survey mode to review the ranked evidence before authorizing any deletions.
  • Name a specific subsystem or symbol to keep the audit focused and thorough rather than broad and shallow.
  • Make sure the project has real tests before asking for change mode, since the skill relies on them to validate each cut.
