What it does
This skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent how to reason about OpenRig, a system for running groups of AI coding agents as managed topologies called rigs. Once installed, the agent knows how to handle lifecycle operations such as starting, stopping, resuming, snapshotting and destroying rigs, and how to read status output after a reboot without trusting it blindly. It also tells the agent to report failed restores loudly instead of silently starting fresh, and to treat expired provider logins as a human decision rather than something to fix in code.
Great for
- Developers running OpenRig rigs who need to recover work after a reboot or crash
- Engineers designing test proof for rig start, resume and restore scenarios
- Operators auditing whether a rig's reported health matches what is actually running
Skip it if
- Users who only need a single, simple CLI command; the skill notes that the openrig-user skill covers the CLI surface instead (reason: unnecessary context)
- Anyone expecting it to run restores automatically; it is guidance text and does not itself perform recovery (reason: it may set false expectations)
Try asking
- “After my machine rebooted, check whether my OpenRig rig actually recovered and tell me what to trust in rig ps”
- “Design a test plan covering clean start, warm resume, host reboot and provider auth loss for my rig”
- “My rig restore failed; explain the outcome and whether a fresh launch needs to be an explicit follow-up”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Install the openrig-user skill alongside this one so the agent knows the exact CLI syntax.
- Ask the agent to verify rig ps output against the live runtime, since the skill treats status summaries as possibly optimistic.
- Provide real reboot evidence when asking for lifecycle proof; the skill says in-process unit tests alone are not enough.
