What it does

When installed, the agent acts as an architect for OpenRig, a system for running teams of AI agents together. Given a goal such as building a web app or monitoring a service, it plans the team: how agents are grouped into pods, what role each agent plays, and what instructions, guidance and startup content each one receives. It writes the topology and agent specification files, checks them with validation commands, and helps diagnose a launched team whose agents are not behaving as intended. The skill is mostly a detailed procedure and reference guide that tells the agent which OpenRig docs and commands to consult, and it defers to other skills for changing OpenRig itself or routine day-to-day operation.

Great for

  • Developers setting up a new multi-agent team on OpenRig
  • Teams debugging a running OpenRig rig whose agents are misbehaving
  • People who want help deciding how many agents to use and how to split their roles

Skip it if

  • Changing OpenRig's own source code, which the skill says belongs to the developing-openrig skill
  • Routine operation of an existing rig, such as day-to-day CLI commands, which the skill says belongs to openrig-user
  • People without OpenRig installed, since the skill depends on its CLI, specs and reference docs

Try asking

  • “Design a rig of about five agents to build and review a small web application, and write the RigSpec and AgentSpec files.”
  • “Why are the agents in my launched rig not following their guidance? Help me diagnose it.”
  • “Create startup guidance and culture files for a research pod in my existing rig.”
Step-by-step guide: how to use OpenRig ArchitectInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    openrig-architect.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip openrig-architect.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip openrig-architect.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with a small rig of 2 to 3 agents to validate your specs before scaling up.
  • Describe your goal, workflows, tech stack and available runtimes up front so the topology fits your project.
  • Run the validation commands the skill references after each spec change, and check the installed OpenRig version against the docs it reads.
