What it does

Once installed, the agent approaches API work like an API design architect. When you ask for an API contract, it structures the OpenAPI document (info, servers, paths, components), reuses schemas via $ref, composes schemas with allOf/oneOf/anyOf, sets up security schemes, uses consistent pagination and error formats, and writes descriptions and examples. It is guidance only: it shapes the specification the agent writes, and does not itself validate, generate, or run anything.

Great for

  • Backend or API developers designing a new REST API before implementation
  • Teams wanting consistent OpenAPI specs across endpoints and services
  • Developers reviewing an existing OpenAPI file for naming, versioning, or documentation gaps

Skip it if

  • Non-technical users who only need a simple API explanation, since the content assumes familiarity with REST and OpenAPI
  • Projects needing actual validation or code generation: the skill only describes tools like openapi-generator and linters, it does not run them

Try asking

  • “Design an OpenAPI 3.1 spec for a orders API with pagination and bearer-token auth”
  • “Review my openapi.yaml for inconsistent naming and missing descriptions”
  • “Create reusable error response and pagination components for my API spec”
  • “Model a notification endpoint that returns either an email or push notification using discriminator and oneOf”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    openapi-expert.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip openapi-expert.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip openapi-expert.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent your existing spec or endpoint list so it can apply the conventions to your real API rather than generic examples.
  • Name the OpenAPI version you target (3.0 or 3.1), since the guidance covers both and some features such as webhooks are 3.1-only.
  • Run your own linter (for example Spectral) and code generator on the output, because the skill itself does not validate the spec.
