What it does

Once installed, the agent can produce a set of images using OpenAI's image generation service. It either invents structured, random prompts (for example, a lobster piloting a scooter) or uses a prompt you provide, then saves the PNG files, a prompts.json file mapping each prompt to its image, and an index.html thumbnail gallery you can open in a browser. The skill runs a Python script to do this, so it needs your OpenAI API key.

Great for

  • Designers or creators who want quick batches of concept images to browse
  • Developers exploring OpenAI's image models from a terminal or agent workflow
  • Anyone who wants a gallery of varied AI art with prompts recorded alongside the files

Skip it if

  • Users without an OpenAI API key or who do not want to pay per image generated, since each request is billed to the key owner
  • Work needing guaranteed brand-safe or licensed imagery, because outputs are AI-generated and unverified for rights or accuracy
  • Sensitive projects where prompts or content should not leave your machine, because prompts are sent to OpenAI

Try asking

  • “Generate 16 random structured images with gpt-image-1.5 and open the gallery”
  • “Create 4 images from the prompt 'ultra-detailed studio photo of a lobster astronaut'”
  • “Make high-quality 1536x1024 images and save them into ./out/images”
Step-by-step guide: how to use OpenAI Image GeneratorInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    openai-image-gen.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip openai-image-gen.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip openai-image-gen.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with a small --count (for example 4) to check cost and output before running large batches
  • Use --out-dir to keep outputs in a project folder rather than the default ~/Projects/tmp location
  • Review generated prompts in prompts.json before sharing images, since they are auto-generated
