What it does
This skill gives an AI assistant a structured playbook for building MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, which are small programs that let AI assistants call outside tools and read outside data. Once installed, the agent follows the guide's rules for naming and describing tools, validating inputs, handling errors, managing resources, writing tests, debugging with the MCP Inspector, and packaging the server for npm, pip or Docker. The file itself is written guidance and code templates; it does not run anything on its own.
Great for
- Developers who are building a new MCP server in TypeScript or Python
- Teams wanting consistent tool naming, error handling and security practices across MCP servers
- Developers debugging an MCP server that does not show up or is called incorrectly
Skip it if
- People who just want to use an existing MCP server; this skill is for building one, not connecting to one
- Non-developers, since the output is TypeScript or Python code and command-line setup
- Production security reviews on their own: the skill lists good practices but does not audit any specific code
Try asking
- “Help me design an MCP server that exposes our internal issue tracker to Claude”
- “Review my MCP tool descriptions and parameter schemas and suggest improvements”
- “Set up a TypeScript MCP server project with Zod validation and an Inspector test workflow”
- “Package my MCP server for npm so users can run it with npx”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Name the language and transport you want (TypeScript or Python, stdio or other) so the agent picks the matching template.
- Ask the agent to run the MCP Inspector and your tests after each change rather than relying on the written guidance alone.
- Keep API keys in environment variables as the skill recommends, and check generated code for any hardcoded secrets before publishing.
