What it does
This skill teaches the agent to turn many common file types, such as PDFs, Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents, web pages, spreadsheets, images, audio recordings and YouTube links, into plain Markdown text that is easy to read, search and feed into other tools. It runs the open-source markitdown tool through uvx, so nothing has to be installed by hand first. Once installed, the agent can answer questions about a document's contents by converting it first rather than guessing.
Great for
- People who need the text of a PDF or Office document in a form an AI assistant can read
- Developers building pipelines that ingest documents into Markdown for search or LLM context
- Anyone who wants to transcribe or extract text from scanned images or audio recordings
Skip it if
- Sensitive or confidential files if you do not want content sent to external services: the optional Azure Document Intelligence (-d) option uploads the file to Microsoft's cloud, and YouTube or audio features may also reach outside services
- Pixel-perfect layout reproduction: Markdown loses formatting, and complex PDFs or scans may extract imperfectly
- Environments without uv/uvx or internet access for the first run, since the tool is fetched at runtime
Try asking
- “Convert this report.docx into Markdown so I can summarise it”
- “Turn the spreadsheet data.xlsx into a Markdown table”
- “Extract the text from this scanned PDF using Azure Document Intelligence”
- “Transcribe the audio file meeting.mp3 and save the result as meeting.md”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Use -o to save output to a file so the agent can re-read it without reprinting large documents
- For poor PDF extraction, try the -d option with an Azure endpoint, but only on files you are comfortable sending to Azure
- Pass -c UTF-8 or -x/-m hints when piping from stdin or when encoding detection goes wrong
