What it does

When installed, the agent knows how to help a frontend team set up consumer-driven contract testing with Pact. Instead of running frontend and backend together in slow end-to-end tests, the frontend records what it expects from the API as a contract, publishes it to a broker, and the backend verifies against it in its own CI. The agent can check whether such tests exist, add them, explain the workflow, and review existing Pact tests for overly loose matchers or missing status code checks.

Great for

  • Frontend developers whose integration tests are slow or flaky because they need backend services running
  • Teams deciding whether two services can be deployed independently
  • Engineers who want to replace end-to-end tests with contract tests

Skip it if

  • Projects with no separate backend API or a single codebase, where contract testing adds little value (the skill assumes a service boundary)
  • Anyone wanting a quick one-off answer without setting up a Pact Broker and CI changes, since the workflow requires that infrastructure

Try asking

  • “Set up Pact consumer tests for my frontend API client and explain what to publish to the broker”
  • “Review my Pact consumer tests for overly permissive matchers and missing status code assertions”
  • “Explain how contract testing compares to mocking and end-to-end testing for our team”
  • “Check whether our frontend and backend have contract tests covering the API boundary”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Contract Testing GuideInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    contract-testing.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip contract-testing.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip contract-testing.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Point the agent at your actual API client code and existing tests so it can review concrete interactions rather than generic examples
  • Read references/rule.md for framework-specific examples, since the main SKILL.md is a summary
  • Expect the agent's suggestions to need adapting to your Pact version and broker setup
