What it does
Once installed, the agent can explain what 'context' means for a language model: everything it can see at once, including instructions, tool definitions, documents and message history. It frames context as a limited attention budget rather than storage, and explains ideas like the U-shaped attention curve (information in the middle of a long context is recalled less reliably) and why less but better-chosen context often beats more. It is meant for conceptual reasoning and onboarding, and it routes operational problems such as debugging, token cost, summarization and project design to other specialized skills.
Great for
- Developers new to building LLM agents who need the mental models before tuning prompts
- Teams onboarding contributors to context-engineering practices
- Writers or students who want a grounded explanation of how model attention constrains agent behavior
Skip it if
- Hands-on fixes such as debugging lost-in-the-middle failures or cutting token costs: the skill itself says these belong to other skills (context-degradation, context-optimization), so this one will only explain the concepts
- Anyone expecting a working tokenizer or precise token counts: the bundled script uses a rough character-ratio estimate and is labelled demo-only
Try asking
- “Explain what a context window is and why more tokens isn't always better, for a non-technical teammate”
- “Walk me through the U-shaped attention curve and what it means for where I put my system prompt constraints”
- “Help me reason from first principles about whether to put tool outputs in my agent's history or in files”
- “Give me a background reading list on context engineering concepts before I start on the project”

Ask for the task
No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.
Get better results
- Ask conceptual questions ('why', 'what does this constraint mean'); for operational questions, the skill will point you to the specialized skill to use instead
- Treat the bundled script as a teaching demo: its token estimates are heuristics, so swap in a real tokenizer before relying on any numbers
- Pair it with a concrete example from your own project so the abstract concepts map to real prompts and tool outputs
