What it does

This skill gives an AI agent a step-by-step playbook for setting up a pfSense firewall, an open-source router and firewall appliance. Once installed, the agent can draft network zone layouts (DMZ, internal, guest, IoT), write firewall allow/deny rules, configure port-forwarding NAT, plan IPsec or OpenVPN tunnels, and set bandwidth policies. A bundled Python script can also push changes to a pfSense box through its REST API, so the agent can act on a live device rather than only writing instructions.

Great for

  • Network engineers or IT admins building a segmented pfSense perimeter or lab
  • Students learning how firewall zones, NAT and VPNs fit together
  • Security teams reviewing or drafting firewall policy before a change window

Skip it if

  • Production firewalls without a tested change plan: the example rules and IP ranges are illustrative and a wrong rule can cut off access or expose services
  • Replacing host-based firewalls or IDS/IPS: the skill itself says it should not be the sole control
  • Non-pfSense firewalls: the steps are specific to pfSense menus and the pfsense-api package

Try asking

  • “Design a DMZ, server, guest and IoT segmentation plan for my pfSense box and write the firewall rules for each zone”
  • “Set up port forwarding so HTTPS reaches my web server in the DMZ, with NAT reflection enabled”
  • “Write pfSense firewall aliases and rules that block IoT devices from reaching my internal LAN”
  • “Create a checklist for configuring a site-to-site IPsec VPN on pfSense”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 3 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    configuring-pfsense-firewall-rules.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip configuring-pfsense-firewall-rules.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip configuring-pfsense-firewall-rules.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Review every generated rule and alias against your real topology before applying; the example IPs and zones are placeholders
  • Use a lab or staging pfSense instance first, and keep console or out-of-band access in case a rule locks you out
  • Keep API credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager, not in chat or in scripts, and only enable SKIP_TLS_VERIFY for lab certificates
