Book-to-Skill Converter

Turns books and documents into reusable agent skills with frameworks, principles and techniques

What it does

Once installed, the agent can take a book or document (PDF, EPUB, DOCX, Markdown, plain text and more) and convert it into a structured skill folder. Instead of writing a summary, it extracts named frameworks, principles, step-by-step techniques, anti-patterns and the author's voice, so you can later ask the agent to apply that author's methods while it works. It can also update an existing skill with new source files.

Great for

  • Readers who want an AI agent to apply a book's frameworks to their everyday work
  • Developers building a reusable knowledge base from technical documentation or manuals
  • Students who want a structured study aid from a textbook

Skip it if

  • Copyrighted books you do not have rights to share, since the output is a derived knowledge file that may be distributed or stored
  • Quick summaries only, because the skill is designed for structured extraction rather than short overviews
  • Environments where running local scripts is not allowed, because the skill runs a helper script (extract.py) and reads and writes files

Try asking

  • “Convert ~/Downloads/atomic-habits.pdf into a skill called habits-coach”
  • “Analyze only: extract the frameworks from this EPUB and show me a report before generating files”
  • “Update my existing decision-making skill with the new chapters in ./notes/part2.md”
  • “Build a reusable knowledge base from this folder of Markdown research notes”
Step-by-step guide: how to use Book-to-Skill ConverterInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 15 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    book-to-skill.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip book-to-skill.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip book-to-skill.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Start with analyze-only mode to review the extracted frameworks before generating full skill files
  • Use a clear skill-name slug at the end of the command so the generated skill is easy to find later
  • Check the generated files and approve the shell and file permissions the host prompts you for on first use
