What it does

Once installed, the agent approaches API work like an experienced API tester. It walks through authentication checks, invalid input, pagination, rate limits, CORS, and GraphQL schema and depth limits, and it suggests curl commands to run each check. When a request fails, it works through status codes, headers, versioning, and network causes in a set order instead of guessing. It only writes instructions and commands; it does not run anything on its own from the file itself.

Great for

  • Backend developers checking a new or changed REST or GraphQL endpoint
  • QA engineers who want a systematic list of negative and edge-case tests
  • Anyone debugging a failing API call and needing a structured diagnosis

Skip it if

  • Load or penetration testing of systems you do not own, since the skill does not address authorization and could encourage aggressive probing like rapid-fire rate-limit tests
  • Running destructive calls (DELETE, bulk updates) against production, which the skill itself warns against but cannot technically prevent

Try asking

  • “Write a curl test plan for our POST /orders endpoint covering auth, validation, and idempotency.”
  • “Why is my API returning 415 when I send JSON? Walk me through debugging it.”
  • “Check whether our GraphQL API has depth and complexity limits and how to test them.”
  • “Verify our CORS preflight setup works for a browser frontend.”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the Apache-2.0 licence and an attribution note.

    api-tester.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip api-tester.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip api-tester.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Provide the OpenAPI/Swagger spec or endpoint docs so the agent can test against the real contract.
  • Store tokens in environment variables (for example $TOKEN) rather than pasting them into chat or scripts.
  • Run suggested commands against a staging or test environment first, especially for write operations.
