What it does

Once installed, the agent approaches API documentation as a specialist would: it helps write or check OpenAPI 3.1 and AsyncAPI specifications, drafts interactive docs and onboarding guides, covers authentication and webhook security explanations, and plans versioning and migration notes. The skill is a set of instructions and checklists; it does not itself contain scripts or tools.

Great for

  • Backend or platform engineers who need to document an existing REST or event-driven API
  • Developer relations or technical writers building a developer portal or onboarding guide
  • Teams generating SDK documentation or code examples from an API spec

Skip it if

  • Quick internal notes or informal summaries, which the skill itself says it is not for
  • Pure backend implementation with no documentation goal
  • Projects with no API surface or spec, as the skill states these are out of scope
  • Anyone expecting it to actually publish docs or run tests: the file only describes these capabilities and names no tools to execute them

Try asking

  • “Write an OpenAPI 3.1 spec for my orders API, including auth flows and example responses”
  • “Draft a getting-started guide for developers integrating our payments API”
  • “Review my webhook documentation and suggest what signature verification details to add”
  • “Plan a versioning and deprecation notice for our v1 to v2 API migration”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    api-documenter.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip api-documenter.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip api-documenter.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent your existing spec or code files so it can check accuracy rather than guess endpoints
  • Name the target audience (internal engineers, partners, public developers) so the tone and depth match
  • Ask for concrete curl or code examples and test them yourself, since the skill claims automated testing but includes no test tooling
