What it does

This skill gives the agent a 98-rule design spec for building command-line tools that AI agents can use reliably. When you ask for help designing or auditing a CLI, the agent follows rules for JSON output by default, structured error messages, predictable exit codes, separating data from logs, rejecting unsafe or malformed input, and describing the tool so other agents can discover its commands. It is a proposal from a third-party project, not an official or certified safety standard.

Great for

  • Developers building a new command-line tool that scripts or AI agents will call
  • Teams retrofitting an existing CLI so automation pipelines can parse its output and errors
  • Engineers who want a checklist to audit a CLI against agent-safety conventions

Skip it if

  • Projects that need an official security certification, since the spec states it is a contributed proposal and not a safety certification
  • Changing a stable public CLI in a way that breaks existing users, because the spec's rules must be adapted to the product's real contract rather than applied blindly

Try asking

  • “Review my Python CLI and tell me which rules it fails for agent-friendly JSON output”
  • “Design the command structure and error codes for a new deployment tool that an AI agent will run”
  • “Add structured JSON errors and proper exit codes to this existing command-line script”

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    ai-native-cli.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ai-native-cli.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip ai-native-cli.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Tell the agent which existing interfaces must stay compatible so it adapts the rules rather than breaking your users.
  • Ask for a priority-ordered list (P0 first) to focus on what actually breaks agent use.
  • Treat the guardrail suggestions as a starting point and verify them in your own code, since the spec itself says validation must be enforced in code.
