What it does

Once installed, the agent approaches AI-building tasks like a senior AI engineer: it clarifies goals and constraints, proposes an architecture covering model choice, retrieval (RAG), vector search and agent orchestration, then implements with attention to monitoring, safety guardrails, cost controls and testing. It is a set of guidelines and reference knowledge in a SKILL.md file rather than a tool that runs code by itself. The file is cut off mid-sentence in the 'Behavioral Traits' section.

Great for

  • Developers building chatbots, RAG search or LLM features in an application
  • Engineers choosing between vector databases, embedding models or agent frameworks
  • Teams who want guardrails for prompt injection, PII and cost in an AI product

Skip it if

  • Pure data science or traditional machine learning without LLMs, which the skill itself says is out of scope
  • Quick UI changes unrelated to AI features
  • Live production deployments without proper access and review, since the skill notes that live deployment needs target access and it should not be treated as a substitute for human sign-off

Try asking

  • “Design a RAG architecture for searching our internal support documents with hybrid search and reranking”
  • “Compare Pinecone, Qdrant and pgvector for a 10-million-document semantic search service”
  • “Add PII redaction and prompt injection guardrails to our customer chatbot”
  • “Plan a staged rollout and A/B test for switching our app to a new LLM”
Step-by-step guide: how to use AI Engineer GuideInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 1 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    ai-engineer.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ai-engineer.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip ai-engineer.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Give the agent your actual constraints (latency, budget, data sensitivity) so it can choose models and architecture sensibly rather than generic options.
  • Verify model names, pricing, API versions and deprecations yourself; the skill explicitly says its named models are examples, not a current allowlist.
  • Treat the output as a design and review aid and have a human check any code, security decisions or sensitive-data handling before deployment.
