What it does

When installed, this skill tells an AI coding agent (such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot or Codex) how to work within safety limits: which files it may read or change, which shell commands it may run, and how secrets are kept out of its output. It supplies templates for a CLAUDE.md rules file, a command allowlist, Linux file permission setup, git-secrets pre-commit scanning, and a Python script that searches agent output for leaked credentials. Its guidance is advisory; the file itself says a CLAUDE.md is not an OS sandbox.

Great for

  • Engineering leads setting up AI coding agents for a team
  • Developers who want rules limiting what an agent can touch in a repository
  • Security-minded teams reviewing agent-generated code before it reaches version control

Skip it if

  • Individuals who just want to write code faster, since the setup is heavy and restrictive (risk of blocking normal work)
  • Anyone expecting enforced protection from a Markdown file alone, because CLAUDE.md is behavioural guidance and the skill says so; real enforcement needs OS or tool permissions
  • Running the Linux setup script on a live developer repository, because it changes ownership and permissions recursively and the file warns against that

Try asking

  • “Create a CLAUDE.md for my repo that blocks reading .env files and pushing to main”
  • “Help me set up git-secrets pre-commit scanning for AI-generated commits”
  • “Review my agent permission config and suggest a command allowlist for npm and pytest”
  • “Scan this folder of agent output for leaked API keys or private keys”
Step-by-step guide: how to use AI Coding Agent GuardrailsInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

Install in 3 steps

  1. 1

    Download the skill

    The ZIP contains the 2 original files, the MIT licence and an attribution note.

    ai-coding-agent-guardrails.zip
  2. 2

    Add it to your agent

    Claude Code (all projects)

    mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && unzip ai-coding-agent-guardrails.zip -d ~/.claude/skills/

    Claude Code / Agent SDK (this project only)

    mkdir -p .claude/skills && unzip ai-coding-agent-guardrails.zip -d .claude/skills/

    Claude apps (web/desktop): Settings → Capabilities → Skills → Upload skill, and choose the ZIP.

  3. 3

    Ask for the task

    No special command needed — the agent reads the skill's description and loads it when your request matches. Try one of the prompts above.

Get better results

  • Treat the CLAUDE.md and allowlist as guidance, and enforce boundaries with OS permissions, tool settings or a disposable sandbox checkout.
  • Test the setup script on a disposable copy of the repo first and verify traversal and default ACLs, since the file notes they are not granted automatically.
  • Review the sample secret regexes for false positives and negatives before relying on them in CI.
