What it is

Context7 is a service that supplies up-to-date documentation and code examples to AI coding assistants. Instead of relying on an AI's older training data, your agent can fetch current docs for a specific library or version while it writes code. It works either through a CLI with an installed skill or through an MCP server that the agent calls directly.

  • Ask an agent to write a Next.js proxy and have it pull current Next.js docs first
  • Have an agent look up Cloudflare Worker caching configuration from current docs
  • Request Supabase auth examples with a specific library ID so the right docs are loaded
  • Search the Context7 index from the command line with ctx7 library and ctx7 docs

Great for

  • Developers who use AI coding agents such as Claude, Cursor, or VS Code for libraries that change often
  • People who have seen AI tools invent APIs or produce outdated code
  • Teams that want agents to pick the correct version of a framework
  • Anyone who wants to avoid switching to a browser to look up docs

Not ideal for

  • People who do not use an AI coding agent, since the main value is feeding docs into one
  • Projects that rely only on stable, well-known libraries where the model's training data is already reliable
  • Users who cannot send prompts or library names to an external service, since requests go to Context7's servers
Step-by-step guide: how to use Context7Install, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Install with a package manager

    You'll need: Node.js 22.13 or newer

    Run the guided setup

    npx ctx7 setup

    Remove the generated setup later

    npx ctx7 remove
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Run npx ctx7 setup and follow the OAuth prompt to generate an API key
    • Choose CLI + Skills or MCP mode, or use --cursor, --claude, or --opencode to target an agent
    • Open your coding agent and add 'use context7' to a library-related prompt
    • Optionally add a library ID such as /supabase/supabase to skip the matching step
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Get a free API key from context7.com/dashboard for higher rate limits
    • Add a library ID with the slash syntax to load docs for an exact library
    • Mention a version number in your prompt so Context7 matches that version
    • Add a rule to your agent, such as a CLAUDE.md entry, so Context7 is used without being asked each time

Downloads

Strengths

  • Brings current, version-specific documentation into the agent's context
  • Works with several coding agents through CLI or MCP modes
  • Setup is a single command, and a free API key raises rate limits

Trade-offs

  • Depends on a hosted service at context7.com and its MCP endpoint
  • Output quality depends on the agent and the docs that are indexed, which the README does not fully detail
  • The ctx7 CLI needs Node.js 22.13 or newer
