What it is

NewsNow is a web app that gathers currently trending news from a range of sources and shows it in a simple, minimal reading layout. It refreshes on a schedule and caches results so pages load quickly and sources are not hit too often. You can also run your own copy of it, for example on Cloudflare Pages or Vercel.

  • Open the hosted site to browse trending headlines in one view
  • Deploy your own copy to Cloudflare Pages or Vercel without login or caching
  • Enable GitHub OAuth login to sync data and force-refresh the cache
  • Connect an MCP-compatible client to the newsnow-mcp-server package

Great for

  • People who want a quick, uncluttered view of what is trending in the news
  • Developers who want to self-host a personal news reader
  • Users who want to connect the service to an MCP-compatible AI client

Not ideal for

  • Anyone needing new contributions to the project: the README says it no longer accepts contributions while a successor, NewsNext, is in development
  • People who want a long-term, actively developed product: the README says a next-generation version is coming and the roadmap is not dated
  • Users needing full article text or a broad archive: the README describes only trending headlines and caching, not full archives

Strengths

  • Simple, clean reading interface focused on trending headlines
  • Caching and adaptive scraping intervals are built in to limit load on sources
  • MIT licensed with a straightforward deployment path

Trade-offs

  • The README states new contributions are no longer accepted and a successor project is coming
  • Setup for login, caching and database needs several configuration steps (GitHub app, environment variables, D1 database)
  • Latest release v0.0.43 ships without binaries, so you run it from source or a platform
