What it is

This is a set of Agent Skills, which are instruction files that give AI agents such as Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode knowledge of Obsidian-specific formats. The skills cover Obsidian Flavored Markdown, Bases, JSON Canvas, the Obsidian CLI, Defuddle for extracting clean web page text, and Knap for rendering templates. People use them so their agent can create and edit Obsidian files correctly instead of guessing at the syntax.

  • Ask an agent to create a Markdown note with wikilinks, embeds, and callouts in your vault
  • Have an agent build a Bases view with filters, formulas, and summaries
  • Generate a JSON Canvas file with nodes, edges, and groups
  • Extract clean markdown from a web page with Defuddle to save tokens
  • Render Markdown templates from JSON or CSV data with Knap, including batch generation

Great for

  • Obsidian users who already use an AI coding agent such as Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode
  • People who want an agent to write wikilinks, callouts, properties, Bases views, or Canvas files correctly
  • Plugin or theme developers who want agent help with the Obsidian CLI
  • Users who want an agent to pull clean markdown from web pages

Not ideal for

  • People who do not use an AI agent; the skills only add knowledge to agents and do not run on their own
  • Users looking for a standalone Obsidian plugin or app, since this repo contains instruction files rather than software to run
  • Anyone needing a skill for an agent not listed in the README, since compatibility is described only for skills-compatible agents in general
Step-by-step guide: how to use ObsidianInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: An AI agent that supports Agent Skills, such as Claude Code, Codex, or OpenCode · Git, for cloning the repository or using npx skills with a repo URL

    Install via Claude Code marketplace

    /plugin marketplace add kepano/obsidian-skills

Install the plugin from the marketplace

    /plugin install obsidian@obsidian-skills

Add with npx skills over HTTPS

    npx skills add https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-skills

Clone into the OpenCode skills directory

    git clone https://github.com/kepano/obsidian-skills.git ~/.opencode/skills/obsidian-skills
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Install the skills using the method for your agent.
    • For Claude Code, add the repo contents to a /.claude folder in your vault root, or use the marketplace install.
    • For OpenCode, restart OpenCode after cloning so it discovers the SKILL.md files.
    • Ask your agent to create or edit an Obsidian file, such as a .md note, .base file, or .canvas file.
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Use the obsidian-cli skill with plugin and theme development when working inside a vault
    • Ask for Bases views with filters, formulas, and summaries to use the obsidian-bases skill
    • Use defuddle to extract clean markdown from web pages before adding them to notes
    • Use knap for batch file generation from JSON or CSV data

Downloads

Strengths

  • Follows the open Agent Skills specification, so it works across several compatible agents
  • Covers multiple Obsidian-related formats in one repo
  • Installation is documented for several agents, including a marketplace option and manual copying

Trade-offs

  • The README does not describe how the skills are tested or how often they are updated
  • Setup differs for each agent, and the manual OpenCode path requires cloning the full repo into a specific folder
  • No release is published, so users track the repository directly
