What it is

This is a template repository for a practice called context engineering: giving an AI coding assistant the rules, examples, and feature requests it needs to build a feature end to end. It provides a CLAUDE.md rules file, an INITIAL.md feature request template, and Claude Code slash commands that generate and then execute a Product Requirements Prompt (PRP). The README says it works with Claude Code and presents the strategy as applicable to other AI coding assistants.

  • Write a feature request in INITIAL.md and generate a PRP file with /generate-prp
  • Run /execute-prp on a generated PRP to have the assistant implement the feature and run validation steps
  • Store project-specific coding rules and examples in CLAUDE.md and examples/ for the assistant to follow

Great for

  • Developers already using Claude Code who want a structured way to hand off feature work
  • Teams who want consistent project rules applied across AI-generated code
  • People who prefer writing detailed feature specs before letting an assistant code

Not ideal for

  • People who want a ready-made app or library; this is a template of prompts and configuration files, not a product
  • Beginners with no AI coding assistant set up, since the workflow depends on Claude Code slash commands
  • Anyone expecting RAG or tool-integration guidance, which the README explicitly leaves out for now
Step-by-step guide: how to use Context Engineering IntroInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: Git · Claude Code (for the slash commands described in the README)

    Clone the template

    git clone https://github.com/coleam00/Context-Engineering-Intro.git

    Enter the project folder

    cd Context-Engineering-Intro
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Edit CLAUDE.md with your project rules, or use the provided template as-is
    • Describe the feature in INITIAL.md
    • In Claude Code, run /generate-prp INITIAL.md
    • In Claude Code, run /execute-prp PRPs/your-feature-name.md
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Place real code examples in the examples/ folder, which the README calls critical
    • Use the INITIAL.md sections (FEATURE, EXAMPLES, DOCUMENTATION, OTHER CONSIDERATIONS) to be specific
    • Include validation commands in PRPs so the assistant can iterate until tests pass
    • Review the .claude/commands/ files to see how the commands work and adapt them

Downloads

Strengths

  • Gives a concrete, file-based structure for organizing context for AI assistants
  • Includes example files (INITIAL_EXAMPLE.md, EXAMPLE_multi_agent_prp.md) to learn from
  • MIT licensed and has a large following on GitHub

Trade-offs

  • Built around Claude Code custom commands, so the full workflow is tied to that tool
  • The README's claims of 10x and 100x improvement are asserted, not measured in the material shown
  • Requires you to write thorough examples and specs; the quality of output depends on that effort
