What it is

This is a free, MIT-licensed LaTeX template for writing a résumé or CV. You edit a text file with your details and compile it into a formatted PDF. It is compiled with XeLaTeX and supports Unicode text such as Chinese characters.

  • Fill in your work history and education in the template and compile an English PDF
  • Produce a version of the résumé with a photo using the included photo variant
  • Create a Simplified Chinese résumé by switching to the zh_CN branch
  • Edit and compile online in Overleaf without installing anything locally

Great for

  • People comfortable with LaTeX who want a consistent, professionally styled résumé
  • Users who want to edit a plain-text source and version-control their résumé
  • People who need a Chinese (Simplified) résumé via the zh_CN branch
  • Anyone who prefers compiling online through Overleaf or LaTeX.Online instead of installing tools

Not ideal for

  • People who want a point-and-click resume builder, since editing LaTeX source is required
  • Users who cannot or do not want to install or use a LaTeX toolchain and avoid online compilers
  • Anyone needing Simplified Chinese fonts without Adobe fonts installed, since the README says those font files are large and depend on your OS setup
Step-by-step guide: how to use RésuméInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: Git · A XeLaTeX-capable TeX distribution, or an Overleaf account

Clone only the master branch (shallow, for English résumés)

    git clone https://github.com/billryan/resume.git --branch master --depth 1 --single-branch <folder>
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Fork the repository or clone it using the command above
    • Edit the TeX file with your personal information, or use the Overleaf template online
    • Compile the TeX file to PDF with XeLaTeX locally, or with LaTeX.Online or Overleaf
    • Review the sample PDFs in the README to compare layouts
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Use the Overleaf template to edit and compile in a browser without local setup
    • Try the English-with-photo variant if you want a photo included
    • Switch to the zh_CN branch for a Simplified Chinese résumé
    • Clone only the master branch if you do not need Chinese fonts, to avoid the large font files

Downloads

Strengths

  • Supports Unicode text such as CJK characters with XeLaTeX
  • Designed to be easy to customize or extend, per the README
  • Available online through Overleaf and LaTeX.Online for compiling without local setup

Trade-offs

  • Requires working with LaTeX source, which is a learning curve for non-technical users
  • Chinese fonts are large and the README recommends cloning only the master branch unless you need them
