What it is

This is a pre-built setup for Vim, the text editor that runs in a terminal. Instead of configuring Vim from scratch, you install this collection and get common settings, a file finder, a file tree, Git integration, and a set of color schemes. A smaller 'Basic' version is also offered as a single file with no plugins.

  • Open and search files quickly with the included fuzzy finder (ctrlp.vim)
  • Browse project folders in a side tree with NERD Tree
  • Use Git commands from inside Vim with vim-fugitive
  • Comment out code blocks with vim-commentary
  • Switch between color schemes with :colorscheme

Great for

  • Vim users who want a working setup without writing their own config
  • People setting up Vim on a remote server who want a minimal single-file option
  • Developers who edit code in Python, Ruby, JavaScript, or other supported languages and want syntax support
  • Users who want to learn Vim by reading a documented, plugin-rich configuration

Not ideal for

  • People who want a polished graphical editor; this runs inside Vim in a terminal
  • Users who already have a carefully tuned Vim setup and do not want it replaced
  • Anyone who wants a configuration kept up to date with newer plugin managers; the README describes its own plugin update process, and the last push date is 2024-10-06
Step-by-step guide: how to use amix/vimrcInstall, first run, examples, tips and FAQs

How to get it

  1. 1

    Clone and build from source

You'll need: Vim (8 or later for some plugins, per the README) · Git

Install for your own user only

    git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/amix/vimrc.git ~/.vim_runtime

    Run the Awesome installer

    sh ~/.vim_runtime/install_awesome_vimrc.sh
  2. 2

    Run it

    • Run the clone command to download the repository to ~/.vim_runtime
    • Run the install_awesome_vimrc.sh script
    • Open Vim and try :colorscheme <Tab> to see available color schemes
    • Press ctrl+F to open the fuzzy file finder (ctrlp.vim)
  3. 3

Get the most out of it

    • Create ~/.vim_runtime/my_configs.vim to add your own settings without editing the main files
    • Add plugins via pathogen or the pack directory described in the README
    • Use the leader key (,) mappings listed in the Key Mappings section
    • Install the recommended IBM Plex Mono font for the intended appearance

Downloads

Strengths

  • Installs with a few terminal commands and includes many common plugins preconfigured
  • Offers a minimal Basic option that is a single file with no plugins
  • Licensed under MIT, so it can be reused and modified freely

Trade-offs

  • Includes many plugins, which can feel heavy or conflict with your own preferences
  • Some setup is tied to the author's own workflow, so parts may need adjusting
  • The README does not describe a formal release version, so updates depend on pulling the repository
