What it is
claude-obsidian is a plugin for Claude Code that works with Obsidian, a note-taking app. You drop sources such as articles, papers or notes into an inbox folder, and Claude reads them, writes linked notes with source references, and files them into one connected graph of plain Markdown files stored on your own computer. It is based on Andrej Karpathy's LLM Wiki pattern as described in the README.
- Drop a paper or article into inbox/ and have Claude create linked notes that cite the original
- Ask questions of your vault and get cited answers without the files being changed
- Save a useful answer as a new note when you choose to
- Run a health check to find dead links, orphan pages and gaps
- Lay out notes as a map in Obsidian Canvas
Great for
- People who already use Obsidian and want an AI assistant to organize incoming notes
- Users comfortable running Claude Code in a terminal
- Anyone who wants their notes kept as plain Markdown files they own
- Researchers who want answers with citations drawn from their own vault
Not ideal for
- People who do not use Claude Code, since the plugin is built for it (other hosts are listed but need extra setup)
- Windows users who want to write to the vault natively, since the README says WSL is needed for writes
- Anyone wanting a hosted, cloud-synced note app, since the README stresses local files and no cloud database
How to get it
- 1
Install with a package manager
You'll need: Claude Code · Python 3.11 or newer · Obsidian (for the visual side)
Add the plugin marketplace
claude plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-obsidianInstall the plugin
claude plugin install claude-obsidian@agricidaniel-claude-obsidian - 2
Run it
- Open the folder you want as your vault and start Claude Code there with `claude`
- Run `/claude-obsidian:wiki` to set up the vault; it shows a preview before creating it
- Put sources in inbox/ and run `/claude-obsidian:wiki-ingest`
- Ask questions with `/claude-obsidian:wiki-query`
- Open the same folder in Obsidian using Open folder as vault

Get the most out of it
- Adopt an existing Obsidian vault with /claude-obsidian:wiki without moving your notes (see the installation guide)
- Use /claude-obsidian:save to keep only the answers worth keeping
- Run /claude-obsidian:wiki-lint regularly to catch dead links and orphans
- Use the canvas skill to build visual maps in Obsidian Canvas
- Use the multi-agent setup script to link skills into other hosts such as Codex or Gemini

Strengths
- Notes stay as plain Markdown files on your computer, with no telemetry described in the README
- Originals in inbox/ are kept untouched so summaries can point back to sources
- MIT licensed and free, with a health-check skill for keeping the vault tidy
Trade-offs
- Requires Claude Code and Python 3.11 or newer, so it has setup costs and an ongoing AI tool dependency
- The README says Windows writes need WSL, which adds friction on that platform
- The README's own feature list is long (15 skills, 3 agents); some pieces are optional and not fully explained in the truncated text
