How to use the Wiki Log Fold agent skill (wiki-fold)
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The wiki-fold skill is an agent skill for Obsidian wikis built with the claude-obsidian product. It teaches an AI agent to summarise a batch of recent entries from wiki/log.md into one new fold page, without changing the original log entries or the pages they link to. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what to check before any file is written.
Quick start
- 1Install the product and skill. Install the claude-obsidian product folder and download the wiki-fold ZIP from this page. Unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- 2Check your vault. Make sure your target Obsidian vault has a wiki/ directory with wiki/log.md in the claude-obsidian layout.
- 3Ask for a fold preview. Say something like 'fold the log' or 'run wiki-fold'. The agent returns a draft without changing files.
- 4Review the draft. Check the fold ID, entry count, source citations and the list of proposed paths.
- 5Ask to apply only when ready. Say 'commit the fold' to build the transaction bundle for wiki/folds/, wiki/index.md and wiki/log.md.
- 6Inspect and apply once. Run transaction inspect, confirm the approval hash, then run transaction apply with --approved-plan-sha256 once.
- 7Optional checkpoint. If you use git, run the separate checkpoint command with the operation ID to record a commit.
What is an agent skill, and what does wiki-fold do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file and supporting reference files. When a request matches the skill's description, the agent reads the instructions and follows them. The skill does not add new capabilities to your computer on its own; it gives the agent a defined procedure.
wiki-fold creates an extractive, bounded rollup of recent log entries. The default batch size is 2^4, which is 16 entries, unless you specify an explicit range. Every summary point must cite its source entry, and every number must be verifiable in that entry. The fold never summarises another fold, and it is never triggered automatically.
- Reads raw entries from wiki/log.md in the selected range.
- Writes a fold page to wiki/folds/ only when you explicitly ask it to apply or commit.
- Never modifies, moves or deletes child log entries or their pages.
- Does not update wiki/hot.md.
What you need before installing
The skill depends on the claude-obsidian product and a vault that uses its layout. The source lists these requirements: Python 3 to run the bundled claude-obsidian.py core script and transaction commands; an installed claude-obsidian product folder and a target Obsidian vault containing a wiki/ directory. Git is optional and is only needed for the separate checkpoint command.
The skill runs scripts and does not use the network.
- Python 3 installed.
- claude-obsidian product folder installed.
- An Obsidian vault with a wiki/ directory in the claude-obsidian structure.
- Optional: git, for the checkpoint command.
Install the wiki-fold skill
Download the ZIP for the wiki-fold skill from this page. Then choose one of the two install routes below.
Option A is a personal install: unzip the skill into ~/.claude/skills/. Option B is a project install: unzip it into the .claude/skills/ folder of a specific project. Option C is to upload the skill in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
- Project: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
Trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need special syntax. The skill's description lists the phrases that should activate it. Use wording such as the following, and name a range or batch size if you want a specific set of entries.
Remember that a request to fold only previews the result. Use the words apply or commit only when you want the fold page written.
- "Fold the log."
- "Run a fold on the last batch of log entries."
- "Run wiki-fold."
- "Roll up log entries from the past week."
- "Commit the fold."
Review the dry-run preview
By default the agent returns the complete fold draft, the fold ID, the child entry range, the read budget and the list of files it would change. Nothing in the vault is modified at this stage.
Check that the entry count matches what you expected, that every outcome names its source entry, and that the proposed changed paths are the ones you intended. If fewer entries exist than requested, the skill reports the shortfall and stops instead of folding a partial batch.
- Confirm the deterministic fold ID and entry count.
- Check each outcome cites a source entry.
- Check the proposed paths: wiki/folds/, wiki/index.md and wiki/log.md.
Apply the fold as one transaction
Only when you explicitly ask to apply or commit does the agent build a claude-obsidian.transaction.v1 bundle with operation_type fold. The bundle covers three targets: the new fold page in wiki/folds/, its catalog entry in wiki/index.md, and one new top-of-file entry in wiki/log.md. Each target carries a SHA-256 precondition.
The agent inspects the bundle first, then applies it once with the approval hash from the inspect result. The source describes the commands below. Report the operation ID and the exact changed paths afterwards. If the vault changed during the process, the agent re-reads and rebuilds, and after an interruption it uses transaction recover.
- Inspect before applying; review the approval_sha256 value.
- Apply once with --approved-plan-sha256.
- Optional git checkpoint is a separate command.
python3 "$CORE" transaction inspect /path/to/fold-bundle.json --vault /path/to/vault
python3 "$CORE" transaction apply /path/to/fold-bundle.json --vault /path/to/vault \
--approved-plan-sha256 "$APPROVAL_SHA256"Safety notes: scripts and network
The skill runs scripts: it calls the bundled claude-obsidian.py core script with Python 3. The source sets the core path from a PRODUCT_ROOT you provide and tests that the file exists. The vault is chosen by an explicit --vault flag, the CLAUDE_OBSIDIAN_VAULT variable, workspace config, or current-directory discovery. The plugin or product root is never treated as a vault.
The skill declares that it uses no network. It does not call external services. The source also says it does not use host Write/Edit tools or automatic commits for the fold.
- Runs scripts: yes, claude-obsidian.py with Python 3.
- Uses network: no.
- Writes only through the transaction command when you ask it to apply.
- Dry run is the default.
What people use it for
- Compressing a long run of routine ingest log entries into one reviewable fold page.
- Producing a traceable weekly summary where each figure links back to its source log entry.
- Previewing what a fold would write before deciding whether to commit it to the vault.
- Recording a structured rollup while leaving every child page exactly as it was.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the wiki-fold skill?
Download the wiki-fold ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for a personal install, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What does wiki-fold require?
It requires Python 3 to run the bundled claude-obsidian.py script, an installed claude-obsidian product folder, and a target Obsidian vault with a wiki/ directory. Git is optional and only used for the separate checkpoint command.
Does wiki-fold change my original log entries?
No. The skill states it never modifies, moves or deletes child log entries or the pages they reference. It only adds a new fold page, an index entry and a new log entry, and only when you ask it to apply.
Is wiki-fold free to use?
The source lists the skill under the MIT licence. It does not mention pricing, so check the licence and the repository for details.
Does wiki-fold send my vault data over the internet?
The skill states it uses no network and does not call external services. It does run a local Python script, claude-obsidian.py.
Can wiki-fold run automatically on a schedule?
No. The skill forbids triggering a fold automatically and forbids folds of folds. It only runs when you ask for it.

Our verdict
wiki-fold suits owners of claude-obsidian wikis who want to compress long log runs into a traceable, reviewable page and who prefer to preview every change first. If you want automatic or scheduled summarising, need the agent to rewrite original entries, or keep a vault outside the claude-obsidian layout, pick a different approach.
