How to use the news-pulse agent skill: stock move explained
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
news-pulse is an agent skill that helps you find out why a stock moved sharply. When you ask, the agent runs four parallel research tasks covering company events, regulation and policy, industry rivals and market sentiment, then combines them into a dated timeline and a ranked view of likely causes. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install news-pulse, how to ask for it in plain language, and what it needs and touches on your machine.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Download the news-pulse ZIP from this page and unzip it. The folder contains SKILL.md.
- 2Place the skill folder. Put the news-pulse folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.
- 3Check the requirements. Confirm your agent supports sub-agents and web search, and that the repository files and linked skills the skill refers to are present.
- 4Make the request. Name the company, the price move and the timeframe, for example a 12 percent drop over three days. Answer any clarifying questions the agent asks.
- 5Review the report. Read the timeline, the cause table and the checkbox judgement, then check the data-gap section before acting on any conclusion.
What is an agent skill, and what does news-pulse do?
An agent skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that gives an AI coding agent a set of instructions for one kind of task. When the task matches the skill, the agent follows its workflow instead of improvising. news-pulse is written for Claude Code or a compatible agent.
The skill targets one question: why did a stock just move? It is designed as a fast first pass, roughly 10 to 15 minutes, not a full investment report. The skill describes its own output as a company news pulse: an event timeline, a judgement on the main cause of the move, and a check on whether the investment thesis needs review.
- Four parallel sub-tasks: company events, regulation and policy, industry and rivals, and market sentiment.
- A dated event timeline with each event weighted by how much it could explain the move.
- A cause judgement classed as a business-value event, a sentiment or technical move, unexplained, or mixed.
- Suggested follow-ups such as thesis review, earnings review or management review, with trading decisions left to you.
Install news-pulse from the ZIP file
Download the news-pulse ZIP from this page. The skill is a single file, SKILL.md. Unzip the download so the news-pulse folder sits in one of the skill locations below. Claude Code reads skills from these folders.
For a personal install that works in any project, put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, put it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder. If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the skill there.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/news-pulse/
- Project install: .claude/skills/news-pulse/ inside the project root
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
What does news-pulse need before it runs?
The skill needs more than the SKILL.md file. It expects a working agent setup and parts of a specific research repository. Check these before you rely on the output.
The skill refers to repository files named AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, tools/financial_rigor.py and tools/xueqiu_scraper.py. It also links to other skills: investment-team, earnings-review, thesis-tracker and management-deep-dive. If those are missing, the skill can still run, but the follow-up steps it suggests will not work the way the source intends.
- An agent with sub-agent support (Task or Agent) and web search, such as Claude Code.
- Shell access, used to run a date command and optional Python scripts in the tools/ folder.
- The repository files and linked skills listed above.
- Optional: Xueqiu access through the xueqiu_scraper script, only if the company is on a tracked list.
How do you trigger news-pulse with a natural request?
You do not need special syntax. Name the company and, if you have one, the price move and its timeframe. The skill's workflow asks clarifying questions for anything you leave out, so it is better to give the details up front than have it guess.
The skill's parameters are the company name (Chinese, English or ticker are all accepted), the look-back window (14 days by default, which can be narrowed to 7 during earnings season), the price move with its timing, and the focus area. If you give only a company name, expect the agent to ask how many days of news to cover and whether there was a specific price move to explain.
- Give the company name or ticker, plus the move and timeframe, for example: 'Why did XYZ fall 12% over three days? Run news-pulse.'
- Say the look-back window if it matters, for example: 'Check the last 7 days around the earnings release.'
- Name a focus if you want one, for example: 'Focus on regulation for this drop.'
What output should you expect, and how do you read it?
The final report opens with a one-paragraph explanation of the main cause, a secondary cause and the kind of move it looks like. It then lists the merged timeline, a table of candidate explanations with evidence, counter-evidence, confidence and duration, and a checkbox judgement. The skill saves the report as a markdown file.
Read the 'unexplained' result as a real answer, not a failure. The skill treats it as the most risky conclusion, because either the market knew something first or the sources missed it. For smaller or thinly covered stocks, the skill may find no explaining news, and it says so.
- Saved file: reports/{company}/{company}-news-{date}.md, created in the repository if the folder does not exist yet.
- Each event is tagged by dimension (company, regulation, industry or sentiment) and weight (high, medium or low).
- The report ends with a data-gap statement listing what could not be verified.
reports/{company}/{company}-news-{YYYYMMDD}.mdSafety notes and tips for better results
news-pulse runs commands and uses the network. The skill can run a date command to set the data cutoff, call Python scripts in tools/, and use web search and fetch to read sources. The optional Xueqiu step runs tools/xueqiu_scraper.py and writes its output to a file under /tmp. Read the SKILL.md before you install, and review any script that will run on your machine.
The skill's own rules are useful guidance for you too. It asks the agent to verify rumours with at least two independent sources, to label facts separately from guesses, and to leave trading decisions to you. Treat its output as research input, not advice.
- Run it in a repository you trust, since it reads and writes project files and may run Python scripts.
- Expect it to take a few minutes of sub-agent work; it is built for a quick answer, not a deep study.
- Give it the exact price move and dates. Vague requests produce broader, less focused timelines.
- For deep valuation or a full write-up, use the skills it points you to instead.
What people use it for
- Explaining a single-day move of about 5 percent or more after reading a headline about a company.
- Getting a quick first pass on news around an earnings release before deeper earnings work.
- Deciding whether a large one-week swing reflects a business change that needs a thesis review.
- Checking whether a sector-wide drop explains a stock's move or whether the company has its own events.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the news-pulse agent skill?
Download the news-pulse ZIP from this page and unzip it so the news-pulse folder sits in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.
What does news-pulse need to run?
It needs an agent with sub-agent support and web search, shell access for a date command and optional Python scripts, and the repository files it references, including AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and the tools folder. Xueqiu access is optional and only applies to tracked companies.
Is news-pulse free to use?
The skill is published under the MIT licence, which is stated on this page. This page does not list any price, so check the licence text in the repository for the terms that apply to you.
Does news-pulse give buy or sell signals?
No. The skill states that trading decisions are left to the user, and its output is a cause analysis and a suggested checklist, not a trading signal or professional advice.
How is news-pulse different from a full investment research tool?
news-pulse is built for a quick answer on why a stock moved, in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. The skill itself says full investment research, valuation and long-term thesis tracking belong to other skills such as investment-team, earnings-review and thesis-tracker.
Why does news-pulse say the cause is unexplained?
Sometimes no event in the look-back window matches the size of the move. The skill treats this as its most risky result, since the market may have reacted to information first or the sources may have missed something. This often happens with thinly covered or newly listed stocks.

Our verdict
Use news-pulse if you hold or watch a stock and want a fast, sourced answer on whether a big move reflects real business news, sentiment or nothing identifiable. Pick something else if you need full valuation or deep research, if you want trading signals, or if the stock is a thinly covered micro-cap where the skill may find no explaining news.
