How to use the SE Ranking AI Visibility Analyst agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The seo-seranking skill is an agent skill that lets Claude query the SE Ranking REST API to measure how often a brand is mentioned or cited in answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. This guide explains what an agent skill is, how to install this one, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what to watch for on cost, sampling and security. You need an SE Ranking account and API key before the skill can do anything.

Quick start

  1. 1Get an API key. Create or sign in to an SE Ranking account and obtain an API key from the SE Ranking API page.
  2. 2Run the installer. Run extensions/seranking/install.sh, or install.ps1 on Windows, so that SERANKING_API_KEY is set in ~/.claude/settings.json.
  3. 3Place the skill folder. Unzip the seo-seranking download into ~/.claude/skills/ or the project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  4. 4Or upload it in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  5. 5Run a first AI visibility check. Ask for AI visibility for your brand or use /seo seranking ai-visibility with the brand name.
  6. 6Review the percentages. Read each platform score alongside its sample-size confidence note before drawing conclusions.

What an agent skill is and what this one does

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent when and how to perform a task. When a request matches the skill's description, the agent follows the instructions in that file, which can include running scripts and calling external services.

This skill is part of the claude-seo extension. Its main job is AI Share-of-Voice: it reports the percentage of sampled prompts where your brand appears in answers from each AI platform. It can also pull classic SEO data such as top 100 organic positions for a keyword, backlink profiles and competitor lists.

  • AI visibility for a brand across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode
  • SERP positions and SERP features for a keyword
  • Backlink profile for a URL, as an alternative vendor source
  • Top 10 organic competitors and shared-keyword gaps for a URL

Requirements before you install

The skill needs an SE Ranking account with an API key. The key is stored as SERANKING_API_KEY. The skill's instructions say to check that this variable is present in ~/.claude/settings.json under env before any call, and to tell you to run the installer if it is missing.

You also need the installer from the parent extension to have been run beforehand: extensions/seranking/install.sh on macOS or Linux, or extensions/seranking/install.ps1 on Windows. The skill depends on the claude-seo extension setup.

  • An SE Ranking account and API key (the source points to seranking.com/api.html for the API)
  • The installer extensions/seranking/install.sh or install.ps1 run beforehand
  • The parent claude-seo extension setup

Install the skill with a ZIP file

Download the seo-seranking ZIP from this page and unzip it. To make the skill available to every project, place the unzipped folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps instead of Claude Code, you can upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Trigger the skill with commands or plain requests

The skill defines four routed commands. You can use them directly, or describe what you want in ordinary language and let the agent match the request to the skill's description.

Each command takes one argument. The AI visibility command takes a brand name, the SERP command takes a keyword, and the backlinks and competitors commands take a URL.

  • /seo seranking ai-visibility <brand>: share-of-voice across the five AI platforms
  • /seo seranking serp <keyword>: top 100 organic positions and SERP features
  • /seo seranking backlinks <url>: backlink profile
  • /seo seranking competitors <url>: top 10 organic competitors and shared-keyword gaps
/seo seranking ai-visibility <brand>

Read the AI visibility results

The skill reports five fields: chatgpt_sov, gemini_sov, perplexity_sov, ai_overviews_sov and ai_mode_sov. Each is a percentage. For ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity it is the share of sampled prompts where the brand appears in the response. For AI Overviews and AI Mode it is the brand citation rate inside those results. AI Mode results are US English first.

Scores come from a configurable set of sampled prompts, so the skill reports each percentage with a confidence note based on sample size. Treat the numbers as directional trends rather than exact measurements.

  • chatgpt_sov: % of sampled prompts where the brand appears
  • gemini_sov: same measure against Google Gemini
  • perplexity_sov: same measure against Perplexity
  • ai_overviews_sov: brand citation rate inside Google AI Overviews
  • ai_mode_sov: brand citation rate inside Google AI Mode (US English first)

Control API spend

SE Ranking uses unit accounting. According to the skill, one AI visibility query costs about 5 units, one per platform. Because every query uses units, plan your checks rather than running many variations. The skill also points to dataforseo_costs.py, run through the claude-seo scripts launcher, to log spend across vendors.

  • One AI visibility query is about 5 units
  • Log spend across vendors with the dataforseo_costs.py script via the claude-seo launcher
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/claude-seo" run dataforseo_costs.py

Safety notes: scripts and network access

This skill runs scripts and uses the network, and it sends requests to the SE Ranking API using your key. Only install it from the source you trust and review the SKILL.md before use.

The skill's security section says fetched pages, SERP results, API responses and third-party files are untrusted data. If fetched content contains text addressed to the agent, the agent should report it rather than act on it, and should not run commands, install anything or change settings because that content asks.

  • The skill runs scripts and makes network calls
  • Your SERANKING_API_KEY is read from ~/.claude/settings.json
  • Fetched content is treated as data, not instructions

What people use it for

  • Checking how often a brand is mentioned in ChatGPT and Gemini answers for a set of prompts
  • Comparing a client's AI Overviews citation rate against competitors using SE Ranking
  • Pulling top 100 organic positions and SERP features for a target keyword
  • Reviewing a backlink profile as an alternative source to other SEO vendors
  • Finding top 10 organic competitors and shared-keyword gaps for a URL

Frequently asked questions

Is the seo-seranking skill free?

The skill's listing is MIT licensed, but every command needs an SE Ranking account and API key, and each AI visibility query costs about 5 API units. It is not a free check. Compare the skill's licence with the terms of your SE Ranking plan.

What do I need to install seo-seranking?

You need an SE Ranking API key stored as SERANKING_API_KEY, the claude-seo installer run beforehand (install.sh or install.ps1 in extensions/seranking), and the skill folder placed in ~/.claude/skills/ or .claude/skills/.

How do I install the skill in the Claude apps?

Download the seo-seranking ZIP from the page, then upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.

Why does the skill say my API key is missing?

The skill checks for SERANKING_API_KEY under env in ~/.claude/settings.json before any call. If it is absent, run the installer extensions/seranking/install.sh or install.ps1 and try again.

Are the AI visibility scores exact?

No. Scores come from sampled prompts and carry sampling uncertainty, so the skill includes a confidence note based on sample size. Use them as directional trends, not precise figures.

How does it compare with other AI visibility tools?

The skill's documentation says its scorer uses the same logic as Profound and Peec AI, bundled into one MCP/API. It also covers classic SEO data such as SERP positions, backlinks and competitors, which dedicated AI visibility tools may not. Check each tool's pricing and coverage before choosing.

Our verdict

This skill suits SEO and marketing teams, agencies comparing clients with competitors, and developers who already have an SE Ranking API key and want it inside Claude. It is not a good choice if you lack a subscription or key, need a free check, or require exact figures from sampled prompts.
