How to use the Schema Markup agent skill: setup and examples

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The schema agent skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent to add, repair and optimize schema.org structured data (JSON-LD code) on your website. It is written for website owners, SEO staff and developers who want search engines to read their product, article, organization or breadcrumb pages more accurately. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to phrase a request so it triggers, and what to check before you publish the markup.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip. Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it on your computer.
  2. 2Place or upload the skill. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Describe the page. Ask in plain words, naming the page type and the content it shows, such as a product page with price and availability.
  4. 4Provide the template or HTML. Share the page code or template so the agent can place the JSON-LD correctly.
  5. 5Review the output. Check that every value matches what visitors see on the page.
  6. 6Validate. Run the Schema.org Validator and, for supported Google features, the Rich Results Test before deploying.

What is an agent skill, and what does the schema skill make the agent do?

An agent skill is a folder of instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. The schema skill's main file is SKILL.md, and it is supported by a reference file, references/schema-examples.md, which contains complete JSON-LD examples for common types.

When installed, the agent helps you add or repair schema.org markup for pages such as products, articles, organizations and breadcrumbs. It starts by checking your page type, any existing schema and your goals, then produces JSON-LD code and a testing checklist.

  • Adds new JSON-LD for supported types such as Organization, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList and LocalBusiness
  • Finds and fixes errors such as missing required properties, invalid dates or URLs that are not fully qualified
  • Checks that markup matches the content visible on the page
  • Checks whether a requested Google rich result is still supported before recommending code

Install the Schema Markup skill

Download the ZIP for the skill from this page and unzip it. To make it available across your own projects, place the unzipped folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps instead, upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

How do you trigger the schema skill with a natural request?

You do not need a special command. The skill's description lists trigger phrases, so describe what you want in plain words. Mention the page, the content and, if you know it, the Google feature you are after.

The skill also asks for context when it needs it. Expect questions about the page type, the rich results you hope to get, what data is available, whether schema already exists and your tech stack. If you keep a product marketing context file at .agents/product-marketing.md, the skill reads it first.

  • "Add Product schema to my pricing page. Price and availability are in this template."
  • "Our blog posts have no structured data. Write Article JSON-LD for this post."
  • "Check the existing JSON-LD on this company About page for errors."
  • "Give me BreadcrumbList markup for these category pages."

Example workflow: adding Product schema

Suppose you have a product page and want to add structured data. Give the agent the page HTML or template, the product name, price, availability and image. The skill follows its Product guidance: name, image and offers (price and availability) are required, with sku, brand, aggregateRating and review recommended.

You receive a full JSON-LD block to paste into the page head or the end of the body. Because the skill requires schema to match visible content, only include values that the visitor can actually see on the page.

  • Provide the real values; do not ask for invented reviews or ratings
  • Paste the output into your template or CMS custom field
  • Run the testing checklist before deploying
{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "Product", ... }

What about FAQ and HowTo rich results?

Check this before you start. According to the skill, Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026, and HowTo rich results were retired in September 2023. Markup with these types will not produce those search features.

The skill explains that FAQPage and HowTo can still describe matching visible content in Schema.org. Ask the agent which consumer the markup is for. It will not recommend implementing these types just to obtain a retired Google appearance.

  • FAQPage: optional semantic markup for visible FAQs, not a route to Google FAQ rich results
  • HowTo: retired by Google for rich results
  • Missing retired-feature reports is not evidence of a broken implementation

Validate the markup before you publish

The skill's testing checklist covers three checks: the requested Google appearance is currently supported, the markup validates in the Schema.org Validator and, for supported Google features, it passes the Google Rich Results Test. Required-field errors must be fixed and recommended-field warnings reviewed.

Once the page is live, Search Console has enhancement reports for supported features. Retired types do not get a report.

  • Schema.org Validator: https://validator.schema.org/
  • Google Rich Results Test: https://search.google.com/test/rich-results
  • Search Console: enhancement reports for supported features

Safety notes: scripts, network and data

The skill bundles no scripts and needs no API keys. It runs from its SKILL.md instructions alone, so it does not execute code on your machine or make network calls by itself. Optional inputs are access to your site's HTML or templates, and Google Rich Results Test and Search Console accounts for validation.

Review every snippet before you paste it into production. Schema must describe content that really exists, so do not let the agent fill in ratings, prices or availability you have not confirmed.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • Review generated code and test it before publishing

What people use it for

  • Adding Product JSON-LD with name, image, offers and reviews to an online shop's product template
  • Writing Article or BlogPosting markup with headline, image, datePublished and author for a blog
  • Adding Organization markup with name, url, logo and sameAs links to a company homepage
  • Auditing existing structured data on a site for missing required properties and mismatches with visible content
  • Adding BreadcrumbList markup to category and product pages with breadcrumb navigation

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the schema markup agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

Does the schema skill require API keys or scripts?

No. The skill bundles no scripts or API keys and works from its SKILL.md instructions alone. Optional extras are access to your site's HTML or templates and Google Rich Results Test and Search Console accounts for validation.

Will adding FAQ schema give me FAQ rich results in Google?

No. According to the skill, Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. FAQPage markup can still describe visible FAQs in Schema.org, but it will not produce that Google search feature.

Is the schema skill free to use?

The skill is published under the MIT licence, as stated on this page. Check the licence file in the source repository for the full terms.

Does valid schema guarantee a rich result in Google?

No. The skill explains that valid schema.org markup does not guarantee a Google search feature. Eligibility depends on Google's own guidelines for each supported feature.

What should I do if the Rich Results Test does not detect my markup?

First check whether the feature you want is still supported by Google. The skill says that missing reports for retired features are not a sign of a broken implementation, and you should not remove unrelated supported markup because of them.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you are a website owner, SEO specialist or developer who needs accurate JSON-LD for products, articles, organizations or breadcrumbs, and who will check the output against the page. Pick something else if your main problem is content quality or crawling, since the skill points to seo-audit and other skills for those, or if you want FAQ or HowTo rich results, which Google no longer shows.
