How to use the Progress Screenshots Workflow agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Progress Screenshots Workflow skill (workflow-progress-screenshots) teaches an AI agent to show you real screenshots of visual changes while it works, instead of only describing them. It is aimed at developers and reviewers working on UI, web pages, games, 3D, charts or motion. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it with plain requests, and what it needs to run.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip. Download the workflow-progress-screenshots ZIP from the directory page and unzip it.
  2. 2Place the folder. Move it to ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or to a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. Alternatively upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Install the requirements. Make sure Node.js 22 or newer, Chrome or Chromium, and Python 3 with Pillow are available on the machine.
  4. 4Ask for visual work. Start a task with a visible result and say something like "show me screenshots as you go".
  5. 5Review the captions. Check each picture and its caption, which states what the picture proves.
  6. 6Ask for a fix if needed. If a screenshot shows the wrong state, tell the agent, and it should recapture rather than describe.

What is an agent skill, and what does this one make the agent do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with instructions that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill's description. This skill covers tasks with a visible result, such as UI, pages, games, 3D, charts and motion.

With the skill active, the agent captures the state before, during and after each visual change. It sends the images to you as files with captions as soon as each is ready, and it looks at every image before sending it. If a picture shows a stray pop-up, half-loaded art, missing fonts or the wrong scene, the agent recaptures it rather than sending it.

  • Sends pictures after each meaningful pass, such as the first working version, each big fix, and each round of a scoring loop.
  • Captions each picture with what changed and what it proves.
  • Labels captures honestly, for example as a headless browser capture or a 390×844 browser viewport check rather than a device test.
  • Puts before and after images side by side for comparisons.

Install the skill from a ZIP file

Download the ZIP for workflow-progress-screenshots from the directory page, then unzip it. The skill folder should contain SKILL.md, scripts/capture.mjs and scripts/compare.py.

For a personal setup, place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

If you use the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/workflow-progress-screenshots/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/workflow-progress-screenshots/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Check the requirements before you start

The capture script and the comparison script need a few tools on the machine that runs the agent. The skill also needs a host agent that can send files to you or show images inline.

  • Node.js 22 or newer, used by the capture script for its built-in WebSocket.
  • Chrome or Chromium installed, or a CHROME path set so the script can find it.
  • Python 3 with the Pillow library, used by compare.py.
  • A host agent with a file-sending tool or inline image support.

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. The skill is triggered by the kinds of things people naturally say during visual work. Its description names phrases such as "show me", "screenshots", "keep giving me screenshots" and "where are the screenshots?", and it also applies before any report that claims a visual change works.

Ask in plain language and say how often you want updates if it matters to you.

  • "Show me the new checkout panel once it works."
  • "Keep giving me screenshots after each pass."
  • "Where are the screenshots? I don't see them."
  • "Fix the hover tooltip on the chart and send before and after."

Use the capture and compare scripts

For a headless capture, the agent runs scripts/capture.mjs with a URL and an output file. Settings such as WIDTH and HEIGHT, MOBILE=1 for a 390×844 phone viewport, WAIT_FOR for a ready expression, and SETTLE for a wait in milliseconds are passed as environment variables. For 3D or WebGL scenes, the skill suggests SETTLE=3000 to 5000.

To place images side by side, the agent runs scripts/compare.py with an output file and labelled inputs. Run captures one at a time, because parallel headless Chrome on a busy machine can produce errors and missed frames.

  • Desktop: 1600×900 is the suggested size.
  • Motion: take a short burst of frames, or send a strip of frames, because a still misses movement.
  • Keep capture output in a gitignored folder such as qa/captures/ inside the project.

What people use it for

  • Building a web page layout and getting screenshots of each revision at desktop and phone sizes.
  • Tuning a game's hit feedback and receiving before and after frames of the hint text.
  • Checking a 3D model or chart fix with side-by-side comparisons against the previous state.
  • Reviewing an animation by getting a strip of frames through the effect.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the workflow-progress-screenshots skill?

Download the ZIP from the directory page and unzip it. Put the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder to limit it to that project. In the Claude apps you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need installed to use this skill?

The source lists Node.js 22 or newer, Chrome or Chromium (or a CHROME path set), Python 3 with the Pillow library, and a host agent with a file-sending tool or inline image support. The skill runs scripts and uses the network.

Is this skill free, and what is its licence?

The item is listed under the MIT licence. The source does not state pricing, so check the directory page for any cost information.

Can I use it for backend or data work?

Not usefully. The skill is aimed at tasks with a visible result. Backend logic or data processing gains nothing from screenshots, so it is not the right tool for those.

Why won't my screenshots show up?

The skill's rules say a screenshot mentioned but not sent does not count. Ask the agent to send the file or show the image inline. If it cannot capture something, it should say so and why.

Are there alternatives or does this compare to other tools?

The source does not compare this skill with other tools, so this guide does not make that claim. If you do not want scripts to run or Chrome to launch, this skill is a poor fit, since the capture tool executes code and needs Chrome.

Our verdict

Choose this skill if you build or review UI, pages, games, 3D or charts and want the agent to show you visual progress without being asked. Skip it for backend or data work, or in environments where running local scripts and launching headless Chrome is not allowed.
