How to use the review-resume PM Resume Reviewer agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The review-resume skill is a set of instructions that lets an AI agent review a product manager (PM) resume against 10 resume best practices and suggest specific rewrites. This guide explains what the skill makes the agent do, how to install it, how to ask for a review in plain language, and what to check before you rely on the feedback. You do not need prior experience with agent skills.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the review-resume ZIP from the skill's page in this directory.
  2. 2Unzip the skill folder. Extract it so the folder containing SKILL.md sits in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
  3. 3Or upload it in the Claude apps. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, choose Skills, and upload the skill.
  4. 4Paste your resume. Start a conversation and paste your resume text, using plain language to ask for a PM resume review.
  5. 5Add a job posting (optional). Paste the target job description to get keyword overlap checks and advice on reordering your experience.
  6. 6Apply the feedback and re-check. Edit your bullets, keeping only metrics you can back up, then ask the agent to review the revised resume again.

What the review-resume skill does

Once the skill is installed, the agent reviews a PM resume section by section. It checks the resume against best practices such as a concise professional summary, avoiding personal pronouns, keeping the resume short, and the XYZ+S achievement-bullet formula. The skill asks the agent to quote lines from your resume and suggest concrete edits, so the feedback points at your actual wording rather than general advice.

If you also provide a job posting, the agent checks how well the resume matches it. It looks for keywords from the posting, suggests ordering experience by relevance to the role, and flags gaps between your resume and the job requirements.

  • Reviews the professional summary for specificity and generic phrases
  • Flags first-person and third-person pronouns and suggests action-verb rewrites
  • Checks length and bullet counts per job
  • Rewrites achievement bullets using the XYZ+S formula (achievement, metric, action, specific context)
  • Checks contact details, section order and whether skills appear inside bullets
  • Gives extra guidance for early-career PMs and career changers
  • Compares your resume to a job posting when one is provided

Install the review-resume skill

The skill is distributed as a ZIP file from the skill's page in this directory. Download the ZIP and unzip it so that the skill folder, which contains SKILL.md, ends up in one of the locations below. Agent skills are folders of instructions that an agent reads when a request matches the skill's description.

For a personal install that works in every project, place the skill folder in your user skills directory. For a single project, place it in that project's own skills directory so it only applies there.

You can also upload the skill through the Claude apps. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, then choose Skills and add the skill there.

  • Personal (all projects): ~/.claude/skills/
  • Single project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
~/.claude/skills/

Trigger the skill with a natural request

You do not need a special command. The skill's description says it applies when you are reviewing a PM resume, preparing for job applications, or trying to improve resume impact, so ask for those things in ordinary language. Paste your resume text into the conversation, and add the job posting if you are applying for a specific role.

Good requests state what you want and include the material. The skill's inputs are the resume text and an optional job posting, so providing both gives the most useful tailoring feedback.

  • Review this PM resume against best practices: [paste resume]
  • I'm applying for this product manager role. Check my resume for keyword fit and suggest reordering: [paste job posting] [paste resume]
  • My resume has no metrics. Rewrite my bullets so they follow the XYZ+S formula: [paste resume]
  • I'm a recent graduate applying for my first PM job. What is missing from my resume? [paste resume]

Understand what you get back

The agent starts with a short, friendly introduction that names one or two strengths in your resume. It then goes through each best practice, explaining the practice, what your resume does well or poorly, and specific edits. It finishes with a summary and an offer to review again after you make changes.

Treat the rewrites as drafts. The skill's own examples show what a strong bullet looks like, but the wording and any numbers must reflect your real work.

  • Introduction with strengths
  • Feedback on each best practice, with quotes from your resume
  • Suggested rewrites and examples
  • Conclusion with a summary and an offer to review again

Use it for a targeted job application

To tailor one resume to a specific PM posting, give the agent the job description along with your resume. The skill suggests extracting 5 to 10 key skills or requirements from the posting, then checking that those terms appear naturally in your bullets. It also suggests putting your most relevant experience first.

The skill adjusts its advice to the kind of role. For strategy roles it emphasizes vision and long-term outcomes. For execution roles it emphasizes delivery and operational excellence. For cross-functional roles it emphasizes stakeholder alignment and influence.

  • Paste the full job posting, not just the title
  • Ask which bullets to move up and which to cut
  • Keep keywords only where your experience supports them

Safety notes and limits

The listing states that this skill runs no scripts and uses no network access. It needs no listed requirements beyond an agent that can load skills. Your resume text is handled as conversation content in the agent you use, so review that tool's own privacy terms before pasting sensitive personal details.

The most important limit is about accuracy. The skill pushes for metrics, but it cannot verify them. Only add numbers you can truthfully support, and never invent achievements to satisfy the formula. The advice also reflects one set of general best practices, so it may not suit every market, industry or company.

  • No scripts are run and no network use is listed
  • Only include metrics you can back up
  • Check every suggestion against your real experience before submitting
  • Not designed for non-PM roles, because the practices are written for product management careers

What people use it for

  • Rewriting a vague professional summary into a specific, two- to three-line summary
  • Converting task-based bullets into achievement bullets with the XYZ+S structure
  • Tailoring one resume to a specific PM job posting by matching keywords and reordering experience
  • Getting structured feedback on layout and section order for an early-career or career-change application
  • Removing personal pronouns and tightening bullets to fit a 1-2 page resume

Frequently asked questions

Is the review-resume skill free to use?

The listing states that the skill is released under the MIT licence. Check the terms of the agent or app you run it in, since those may have their own costs and rules.

What do I need to install review-resume?

The listing lists no requirements and says the skill runs no scripts and uses no network access. You need an agent that supports skills, such as the Claude apps or Claude Code, and the skill folder placed in the correct location.

Where do I put the skill files?

Put the unzipped skill folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for use in all projects, or in .claude/skills/ inside a specific project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.

Why isn't the skill triggering when I ask for resume help?

Make sure the skill is installed in one of the locations above. Then ask in a way that matches its purpose, such as reviewing a PM resume or preparing for a job application, and paste the resume text into the conversation.

Can I use it for non-PM resumes like engineering or design?

No. The listing says the best practices are written specifically for product management careers, so the feedback will not fit other roles well.

Is this better than a human resume reviewer?

The skill gives fast, structured feedback on general PM resume practices. It cannot know your industry, market or the people reading your application, so it works best as a first pass before a human check.

Our verdict

Use review-resume if you are a product manager, an early-career PM or a career changer who wants structured, quoted feedback on your bullets, layout and fit to a specific posting. Pick something else if you work outside product management, or if you want a final review that accounts for your industry and market, because the skill applies one set of general best practices and cannot verify your achievements.
