How to use the Page Clone Skill agent skill (page-clone)

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The page-clone skill is an agent skill for OpenMAIC, an agent runtime for building course pages. It teaches an AI agent to make a new page that keeps the design of an existing page, so you change the words and leave the layout alone. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it in plain language, and where it stops working.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the page-clone ZIP from this directory page.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Extract it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into the project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload it in the Claude apps. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the ZIP.
  4. 4Confirm your OpenMAIC tools. Make sure duplicate_scene, read_stage, patch_stage, generate_actions and generate_image are available, with narration enabled.
  5. 5Ask for the clone in plain words. Name the model page and describe the new content and its topic.
  6. 6Review the text read-back. Check the page's combined text for leftover words from the old topic before you accept it.
  7. 7Confirm the narration. Play the generated narration on the copied page to make sure it matches the new content.

What is an agent skill and what does page-clone do?

An agent skill is a folder that holds a SKILL.md file with instructions. An agent reads those instructions when a task matches the skill's description, then follows them using the tools it has available.

The page-clone skill covers one job: building a single page that looks like a page the course already has. Instead of redrawing the design from scratch, the agent copies the model page, decides which elements hold content and which are skeleton such as rules, bands, page numbers, logos and background art, and rewrites only the content slots.

  • Copies the model page with duplicate_scene, including its full content and a new outline entry.
  • Reads the copy's underlying structure with read_stage so it can see every element's path.
  • Replaces text, table cells, code lines, formulas or images one slot at a time with patch_stage.
  • Re-reads the page's text to find leftover words from the old topic.
  • Generates narration with generate_actions, because a duplicated page arrives silent.

Install the page-clone skill

Download the ZIP for the page-clone skill from this directory page. The skill is a single file, SKILL.md, so the unzipped folder is small.

For a personal install, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

If you use the Claude apps, you can upload the ZIP instead. Open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload it there.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills

Check the requirements before you trigger it

The skill depends on the OpenMAIC agent runtime and its specific tools. It will not work in an environment that lacks them, because it calls those tools by name.

The skill needs these tools: duplicate_scene, read_stage, patch_stage, generate_actions and generate_image. Audio or narration generation must also be available for the generate_actions step.

  • OpenMAIC agent runtime with duplicate_scene, read_stage, patch_stage, generate_actions and generate_image
  • Audio/narration generation enabled for the narration step
  • Does not run scripts
  • Does not use the network on its own

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need to name the skill. Describe the outcome you want, and mention that the new page should match an existing one. The skill's description says it applies when a new page must inherit an existing page's design, whether that model came from an imported deck or was written earlier in the course.

Be clear about which page is the model. If you want the layout of lesson 2's summary page for a new topic, say so and name the page.

  • Make a new page that uses the same design as the summary page in lesson 2, but covers photosynthesis.
  • Clone the comparison slide from the imported deck and fill it with figures for the Q3 review.
  • Build a page like the timeline page we wrote earlier, with the dates and events for the French Revolution.
  • Use the title-and-table layout from page 4 for a new glossary page on enzymes.

What happens during a clone, step by step

The skill follows a fixed order. It first copies the page, then reads the copy, then decides what each element is. Only after that does it edit anything, which keeps the original design intact.

A copied page is not a fresh draft. The skill is written to avoid generate_scene on a copy, because that call builds a new element tree and would lose the design you wanted to keep.

  • duplicate_scene copies the model page to the position you choose and gives it a title naming the new page.
  • read_stage with detail set to source returns the page's JSON, including fonts, colours, geometry and z-order.
  • patch_stage makes one set call per content slot, leaving everything else as it was.
  • read_stage with detail set to text lists every text element and the page's combined text, so leftover words are easy to find.
  • generate_actions adds narration to the finished copy.
duplicate_scene({ templateSceneId, targetOrder, title })

Safety notes: scripts, network and edits

The skill itself runs no scripts and uses no network access, according to its listing. Its changes happen through the OpenMAIC tools it calls, so review the results like any other edit to your course.

The skill is built to change only what you name. Each patch touches one path, and a rejected patch leaves the page as it was. Images are the exception to careful sourcing: the skill points an element at a new image only after generate_image returns a real source, and it keeps the original otherwise.

  • Only the path named in each patch changes.
  • A bad path, unknown field or unsafe HTML makes the patch fail without changing the page.
  • Geometry and style values are copied, not adjusted, so the design survives editing.
  • Check the text read-back for old-topic residue before publishing the page.

What people use it for

  • Building a lesson series where every topic page shares one approved layout.
  • Reusing a designed page from an imported slide deck for new course material.
  • Creating a glossary or comparison page that matches an earlier page's table or card design.
  • Testing the OpenMAIC page-editing tools with a consistent set of cloned pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the page-clone skill?

It is an agent skill for the OpenMAIC runtime that builds one new page matching an existing page's design. The agent copies the model page and replaces only the content, keeping the layout, fonts, colours and shapes.

How do I install the page-clone agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or the project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.

Is the page-clone skill free?

The skill is released under the MIT licence, as listed on this page. This guide does not cover pricing for OpenMAIC or any Claude plan, so check those separately.

What do I need to run page-clone?

You need the OpenMAIC agent runtime with duplicate_scene, read_stage, patch_stage, generate_actions and generate_image. Audio or narration generation must also be available for the narration step.

Can page-clone work outside OpenMAIC?

No. The skill calls OpenMAIC-specific tools by name, so it will not function in another environment that lacks them.

How is page-clone different from pro-editing or style-clone?

Page-clone creates a new page from an existing page's design. Pro-editing is for revising a page that already has the content you want. Style-clone handles course-level work, such as cataloguing layouts and assigning one to each outline entry.

Our verdict

Use page-clone if you run OpenMAIC courses and need many new pages to match a design already in your course or an imported deck. Skip it if you are not using the OpenMAIC runtime, if the page you have already has the content you need, or if you are planning layouts across a whole course, where style-clone is the better fit.
