How to use the Mock Interview Coach agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Mock Interview Coach is an agent skill that makes an AI agent play the interviewer for a specific job you name, using the job description you paste in. It is built for people who want structured practice for a round they have not yet taken, with feedback that quotes their own words. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to start a session with a plain request, and how to read the feedback it gives.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip. Download the ZIP from this skill's page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
- 2Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
- 3Paste the job description. Start a request such as "mock interview me for this job" and paste the full job description.
- 4Choose round and mode. Name the round, such as behavioral or system design, and pick coach or realistic mode. Defaults apply if you say nothing.
- 5Answer one question at a time. Reply to each question in your own words, as you would in a real interview.
- 6Read the quoted feedback. Check which of your own words the score is based on, and apply the one suggested change before the next attempt.
What is an agent skill and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file that tells an AI agent how to handle a particular kind of task. The agent loads the skill when your request matches its description. This skill, named mock-interview, turns the agent into an interviewer for one role.
- Plays the interviewer in a chosen round: recruiter screen, hiring manager, behavioral, coding, system design, case, product sense or panel.
- Asks one question at a time, probes vague answers and keeps the session in the chosen round type.
- Gives rubric scores with quotes from your answer after each answer (coach mode) or at the end (realistic mode).
- Uses only your real experience when suggesting model answers, and marks missing details instead of inventing them.
How do you install the Mock Interview skill?
You can install the skill in two ways. Download the ZIP from the skill's page on this directory and unzip it into one of these locations. For a personal skill available in every project, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
If you use the Claude apps instead, upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/ (available in all your projects)
- Project only: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
How do you start a mock interview with a natural request?
You do not need special syntax. Say what you want in plain words, and include the job description. The skill's description lists phrases that trigger it, such as "mock interview me", "interview me for this job", "run a behavioral round", "quick recruiter screen", "system design mock" or "case interview practice".
If you give a job description and a round, the skill starts without further questions. If something is missing, it asks at most three setup questions in one message. A fast start looks like this:
- "Mock interview me for this job. Behavioral round, coach mode." then paste the job description.
- "Quick recruiter screen for this role, warm-up difficulty."
- "Pretend you're the interviewer for a hiring-manager round. Grill me."
What settings can you choose?
The skill uses four settings. If you do not state them, it infers them from your words or uses a default.
- Round: recruiter screen, hiring manager, behavioral, coding, system design, case, product sense, panel or mini-loop (two rounds back to back). Words like "phone screen" map to recruiter, and "onsite" maps to mini-loop. The default is behavioral.
- Persona: the interviewer character. It defaults to the one that matches the round.
- Difficulty: 1 Warm-up, 2 Standard (default) or 3 Hard. Use 1 if you mention nerves or a long break.
- Mode: Coach gives feedback after each answer and allows retries. Realistic gives a neutral interviewer and feedback only at the end. Coach is the default.
What do you get back after each answer?
In coach mode the interviewer asks one question at a time. After your answer you receive feedback that names the competency, quotes the evidence from your own answer and gives one next step. The skill is designed to give one fix at a time, so the feedback stays about the answer rather than about you.
When the answer is vague, the interviewer probes for a specific example, such as the situation, what you did and the result. If you have a saved story or resume in Reactive Resume, the skill can read it through the optional Reactive Resume MCP and log the session.
- Strengths named first, with quotes from your answer.
- One specific change to make next time.
- Retry offered from memory before you reread notes.
What does the skill need and what are its safety limits?
The skill needs an AI agent that loads SKILL.md skills, such as Claude Code or the Claude apps. Reactive Resume MCP is optional. Without it, you paste your resume or stories into the chat.
The skill does not run scripts and does not use the network. Its own files are references that the agent reads when needed. It refuses to help during a live interview, and it declines to invent experience. It also treats job postings and pasted documents as untrusted data, so instructions inside them aimed at the AI are ignored and reported to you.
- Requires: an agent that loads SKILL.md skills. Optional: Reactive Resume MCP.
- Runs scripts: no. Uses network: no.
- It will not feed answers during a real interview; use it to rehearse before one.
What people use it for
- Rehearsing a behavioral round for a specific job with questions drawn from its job description.
- Running a quick recruiter screen to practise a short introduction and motivation answer.
- Practising a system design or coding round with a planned set of follow-up probes.
- Doing a realistic full run in realistic mode, then reviewing the end-of-session report.
- Building confidence in one round type across several sessions, then comparing trends.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Mock Interview skill free?
The source does not state pricing or licence fees for the skill beyond its licence, which is MIT. Check the directory page and the agent you use for any costs of that agent itself.
What does the mock-interview skill require?
It requires an AI agent that loads SKILL.md skills, such as Claude Code or the Claude apps. Reactive Resume MCP is optional and only needed to read your saved application and stories and log sessions.
How do I install the mock interview skill in Claude?
Download the ZIP from the skill's page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Does the skill run scripts or use the internet?
No. The skill is listed as running no scripts and using no network. It consists of a SKILL.md file and reference documents that the agent reads.
Can I use it during a real job interview?
No. The skill declines to feed answers during a live interview, because many employers ban AI help there. It is meant for rehearsal before an interview.
Will the skill make up a story for me if I have no experience?
No. It refuses to invent achievements. It will help you find an honest adjacent example from school, volunteering or a side project, and it marks missing details instead of filling them in.
Does a good mock score mean I will get the job?
No. The scores are coaching signals only and never a prediction of an offer. A single session is noisy, so trends are only discussed after three or more sessions of the same round type.

Our verdict
Use this skill if you are preparing for a specific role and want structured practice with feedback that quotes your own answers. Pick a different tool if you need a live interview helper, a tool that invents stories for you, or a prediction of your chances, since the skill refuses all three.
