How to use the Kanban Board Designer agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The kanban-board skill is a set of instructions that an AI agent reads when you ask for a kanban, task board, sprint board or Trello-style layout. It tells the agent how to build one self-contained web page showing columns, task cards, assignee avatars, labels, a filter bar and a sprint progress sidebar. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and where its limits are, so you can produce a visual board mockup for review.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the kanban-board package from this page and unzip it. It contains SKILL.md and example.html.
  2. 2Place the skill folder. Move it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload it in the Claude apps. Go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill there.
  4. 4Make a natural request. Ask for a kanban, task board or sprint board and describe the squad, sprint stage and columns.
  5. 5Open the output. Save the returned HTML and open it in a web browser to view the board.
  6. 6Check the limits. Remember the cards are static and nothing is saved, so use the board for layout review only.

What the kanban-board skill makes the agent do

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file holds instructions the agent follows when a request matches the skill's description. This skill covers kanban and task boards. When triggered, the agent reads the active DESIGN.md if one exists, pulls the squad name, sprint number, columns and member roster from your brief, and lays out a single-screen board.

The output is one self-contained HTML page with an inline style block. The layout includes a top bar with a project crumb, sprint chip, filter row and search; four columns (Backlog, In progress, In review, Done) each with a count chip and an add affordance; three to six cards per column; and a sidebar called Sprint pulse with a progress bar, top assignees and a blocked-tickets callout.

Install the kanban-board skill

Download the ZIP for the kanban-board skill from this page and unzip it. The package contains two files: SKILL.md and example.html.

For a personal setup, unzip the folder into ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder instead.

In the Claude apps, you can also upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Single project: the project's .claude/skills/ folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills (upload)

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. Ask for a board in plain language and include the words the skill listens for: kanban, task board, sprint board, Trello, or 看板. The skill also recognises jira board as a trigger.

Give the agent context such as the squad size, the sprint stage and the column names you want. The skill's own example prompt describes a five-person growth squad mid-sprint with backlog, doing, review and done columns, so a request like that is a good model.

  • Make me a kanban board for a 5-person growth squad mid-sprint.
  • Build a sprint board for our design team with Backlog, In progress, Review and Done.
  • Create a Trello-style task board mockup for the stakeholder review on Thursday.

Review and view the result

The agent returns an HTML page. Save it as a file and open it in a web browser to view it. Because the board is a visual prototype, the cards are static. Dragging a card looks like it should move, but the change is not saved.

If the project has a DESIGN.md file, the agent uses it for colours, typography, layout and components. Without one, the agent still produces a board, but styling is not drawn from a design system.

Safety notes: scripts and network

According to the listing, this skill runs no scripts and uses no network access. It only supplies instructions and an example file. The output is a static HTML page with no backend and no access control, so do not treat it as a place to store real project data or secrets.

Review the generated HTML before sharing it, as you would with any file an agent produces.

  • Runs scripts: no
  • Uses network: no
  • No backend, no login, no saved data

Tips for better boards

Name the squad, sprint and real column labels in your brief. The skill pulls these into the header and columns, which makes the mockup easier to discuss with stakeholders.

Keep a DESIGN.md in the project if you want the board to match existing colours and type. Use example.html as a reference for what a finished result looks like.

  • List member names and roles so the assignee avatars read clearly.
  • Ask for a specific column set if yours differs from the default four.
  • Check the example.html file before writing a longer prompt.

What people use it for

  • Mocking up a sprint board for a stakeholder review before building a real tool.
  • Sketching a task board layout for a design system exploration.
  • Showing a growth or engineering squad how their columns and sidebar would look.
  • Studying a generated HTML and CSS layout as a learning example.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the kanban board agent skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What does the kanban-board skill require?

It needs an AI agent that can read SKILL.md files and a web browser to view the generated HTML. A DESIGN.md file in the project is optional and used for styling.

Is the kanban board skill free?

The skill is published under the Apache-2.0 licence. This page does not list pricing, so check the licence and the source repository for the terms that apply to your use.

Can I use this instead of Jira or Trello?

No. The skill produces a visual prototype with static cards. Dragging and saving do not persist data, and there is no backend, so it is not a replacement for a real project management tool.

Why won't my dragged cards save?

The board is a static mockup. Cards look draggable, but the output contains no data storage, so changes are not kept after you close the page.

Does the skill run scripts or use the internet?

According to the listing, it runs no scripts and uses no network access. It provides instructions and an example file only.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you need a quick, good-looking task board mockup to review layout or explain a sprint view to stakeholders, or if you are learning HTML and CSS from a generated example. Pick a real project tool such as Jira or Trello if you need working cards, saved data, or team access control.
