How to use the Investment Thesis Tracker agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The thesis-tracker skill is a set of written instructions that an AI agent follows to help you keep a record of why you bought a stock and whether that reason still holds. It is part of the HKUDS/Vibe-Trading agent environment and is released under the MIT licence. After this guide you will know how to install the skill, how to ask for it in plain language, and what the agent saves and reports back.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from the page and unzip it so that SKILL.md sits in a thesis-tracker skill folder under ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/.
  2. 2Or upload it in the Claude apps. Go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the ZIP.
  3. 3Confirm the agent environment. Make sure the agent has the read_file, write_file, web_search, get_stock_news, get_financial_statements and financial_rigor tools, and write access to a reports/ folder.
  4. 4Build a thesis after buying. Ask the agent to write the thesis for a stock you just bought, giving the company name and your buy price.
  5. 5Answer the five thesis questions. Describe the business, its moat, management, the margin of safety and your downside case so the agent can fill in the five sentences.
  6. 6Run a check each earnings season. Ask for a quarterly check on the same company. The agent reads the saved file, checks the assumptions and appends the result.

What the skill makes the agent do

The skill works in two modes. The first time you use it on a company, the agent builds a thesis: a core thesis written as five sentences, a list of 3 to 7 testable assumptions, red lines (conditions that should force you to re-evaluate), and valuation anchors such as a buy price and optimistic, neutral and pessimistic targets. It saves this to a file named reports/{company}-thesis.md.

On later uses, the agent reads that file, gathers fresh news, earnings and financial data, checks each assumption, and scores thesis health from 1 to 10. It then recommends hold, add, trim or exit and appends the check to the tracking table in the same file.

The skill is built around the idea that most investors research, buy, and then stop thinking about the position. It is meant to be used right after a purchase and again each earnings season.

  • Build mode: writes the thesis, assumptions, red lines and valuation anchors.
  • Track mode: re-checks assumptions against new evidence and red lines.
  • Health score: 10 minus penalties for broken, impaired and weakening assumptions and for triggered red lines, with a minimum of 1 and maximum of 10.

Install the thesis-tracker skill

Download the ZIP file for the skill from the page where you found this guide. The skill's file is SKILL.md. You can install it in one of two ways.

For Claude Code, unzip the file into your personal skills folder ~/.claude/skills/, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder if you want it only for one project.

In the Claude apps, upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/ (available across projects).
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder.
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP.

Check what the skill needs before you run it

The skill is written for the Vibe-Trading agent environment. It expects these tools: read_file, write_file, web_search, get_stock_news, get_financial_statements and financial_rigor. It also needs write access to a reports/ folder, because that is where the thesis file is saved.

The skill does not run scripts. It does use the network, since it relies on web search and news tools to gather current information.

  • Tools: read_file, write_file, web_search, get_stock_news, get_financial_statements, financial_rigor.
  • Write access to a reports/ folder for the thesis file.
  • Runs scripts: no. Uses network: yes.

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Describe what you want in plain language after you have bought a stock, or when an earnings season arrives. The skill's description says to use it right after buying (to write the thesis) and every earnings season (to check it).

The source also lists three input forms: a company name, which lets the agent decide whether to build or track; a request to force a rebuild; and a request for a quarterly check against the latest earnings. The agent decides the mode by checking whether reports/{company}-thesis.md already exists.

  • Build: "I just bought Company X at 42. Help me write the investment thesis for it."
  • Track: "Run the quarterly thesis check on Company X against its latest earnings."
  • Rebuild: "Company X thesis build, rebuild it from scratch."
  • Name only: "Check my thesis on Company X." The agent will build if no file exists, or track if one does.

Read the tracking report

A check report covers the health score, an assumption table with statuses (Holding, Weakening, Impaired, Broken), a red-line check, the key changes since the last check, a valuation update, a conclusion and the focus for the next check. The conclusion states whether the thesis is intact, weakening, impaired or broken, what to do, and when to check next.

The score maps to guidance: 9 to 10 suggests considering adding, 7 to 8 continue holding, 5 to 6 hold but stay alert, 3 to 4 consider trimming, and 1 to 2 strongly consider exit. Each red-line trigger reduces the score by 5 points, so a single triggered red line sharply lowers the result.

  • Assumption statuses: Holding, Weakening, Impaired, Broken.
  • Score penalties: broken ×3, impaired ×2, weakening ×1, red line triggered ×5.
  • Each check adds a row to the tracking table: date, health, key change and action.

What people use it for

  • Writing down why you bought a stock and the conditions under which you would sell, before you forget the reasoning.
  • Reviewing a value holding after each earnings release against its assumptions and red lines.
  • Checking whether a falling price reflects broken assumptions or just a market drawdown.
  • Keeping a dated log of health scores and actions for each holding over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is the thesis-tracker skill free?

The skill is released under the MIT licence, as stated on its source page. The source does not state any price for the skill itself, and it depends on an agent environment that runs the listed tools.

How do I install the thesis-tracker skill?

Download the ZIP from the page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What does the thesis-tracker skill need to run?

It needs the Vibe-Trading agent environment with the tools read_file, write_file, web_search, get_stock_news, get_financial_statements and financial_rigor. It also needs write access to a reports/ folder for the thesis file. It does not run scripts but does use the network.

Does thesis-tracker give stock picks or buy and sell signals?

No. It is a discipline checklist for holdings you already own. It recommends hold, add, trim or exit based on a formula and web data, which can be wrong or outdated, and it is not personal financial advice.

How is the thesis health score calculated?

The score starts at 10 and subtracts 3 for each broken assumption, 2 for each impaired one, 1 for each weakening one, and 5 for each triggered red line. The result is kept between 1 and 10.

Can I use thesis-tracker instead of a spreadsheet or another tool?

It is a different kind of tool: it structures your thesis and checks it using the agent's search and financial tools. The source does not compare it with other products, so judge it against your own workflow and verify important figures yourself.

Our verdict

Thesis-tracker suits individual and value-oriented investors who want a written record of why they bought and when they would sell, especially if they tend to hold losers too long or sell in panic. It is a checklist, not a source of verified data or buy signals, so anyone who needs validated financial figures or trading advice should look elsewhere.
