How to use the Interview Prep agent skill: setup and examples

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

Interview Prep is an agent skill, a folder of instructions that an AI agent such as Claude loads when your request matches its purpose. This guide explains what the skill makes the agent do, how to install it, how to trigger it with everyday requests, and what to watch for on safety and privacy. By the end you will be able to prepare a prep pack for one specific interview using only your real experience.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Get the interview-prep ZIP from the skill page.
  2. 2Unzip into a skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the skill.
  4. 4Describe your interview. Say how long you have, the role, and the company, in plain words.
  5. 5Share your experience. Paste or describe real projects, results and situations so the skill can build stories from them.
  6. 6Review and approve the pack. Check each story and brief fact, then approve the batch the skill lists before anything is saved.
  7. 7Debrief afterwards. After the interview, ask for a debrief to plan the next round.

What the Interview Prep skill makes the agent do

The skill prepares you for one specific interview. It builds a story bank in Situation, Task, Action, Result and Reflection (STAR-style) form, mapped to the competencies the role and company test, such as Amazon's Leadership Principles. It also writes a company and role brief from public sources with links and dates, predicts questions for each round, and drafts opener, why-us, weakness and salary answers.

It prepares questions to ask the interviewer and a logistics checklist. After the interview it runs a debrief to help with the next round. Its stated rule is to use only your real experience: it will not invent stories or results.

Install the skill from the ZIP download

Download the interview-prep ZIP from the skill page. Then choose one of two locations. For personal use across all your projects, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: .claude/skills/ inside your project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. Describe your situation in plain words. The skill is designed to respond to phrases such as the ones below. Tell the agent how long you have, because the skill chooses a depth mode based on time left.

  • "Help me prepare for my interview tomorrow."
  • "I have an interview in 2 hours. What do I need?"
  • "Build my story bank for a product manager role."
  • "What will they ask me in a panel interview?"
  • "How do I answer tell me about yourself?"
  • "Research the company before my call."
  • "Debrief my interview."

Choose the depth: triage, standard, full or bank only

The skill picks one of four modes from the time you have. Under 3 hours it gives a one-screen cheat sheet. From 3 hours to 3 days it builds a prep pack for this round. At 4 days or more, or for any final loop, it runs full coverage over several sessions. If no interview is booked, it builds a story bank only, with no brief.

Under 24 hours the skill caps your own work at about 90 minutes and skips the full company brief.

Use it with your resume data and web research

The skill works in plain conversation. If you paste your experience, it builds from that. If you connect the optional Reactive Resume MCP server, it can read your application data and save stories, questions and debrief notes back. It also uses a browsing tool, if you have one, for public company sources.

Without a browsing tool, the skill tells you so and asks you to paste the job posting and the company's about and news pages. It will not write a link, date or figure it has not read in the session.

  • Optional: Reactive Resume MCP server connection to read and save application data
  • Optional: a browsing tool for public company sources; without one, paste the material yourself

Safety, privacy and what to expect

The skill uses the network, because it researches public sources. It does not run scripts. It limits research to public company, role and product information, and to interviewers' professional public work. It does not search your own name, personal social media, family details or home location, and it asks before sending your data to any third-party service.

It also declines to feed answers during a live interview or timed assessment unless the employer allows AI help. For scored role-play practice, use the separate mock-interview skill. For thank-you notes and tracking, use job-application-manager. For salary numbers, offers and negotiation, use offer-negotiation.

  • Uses network: yes. Runs scripts: no.
  • Does not help during live interviews or timed assessments where AI help is banned.
  • Salary history rules and accommodations: the skill gives official sources and says to check current local rules, without legal conclusions.

What people use it for

  • Preparing a story bank before a behavioural interview for a role that tests specific leadership or teamwork competencies.
  • Turning past work into clear examples as a career changer, with each example mapped to the target role's criteria.
  • Getting a cited summary of a company's values, products and recent news, with dates, before a recruiter call.
  • Drafting a tell-me-about-yourself answer in present, past and future order, kept as speaking notes rather than a script.
  • Running a debrief after a round to decide what to improve for the next one.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the interview prep agent skill?

Download the interview-prep ZIP from the skill page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload it under Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills.

Is the interview prep skill free?

This page does not state a price or licence terms beyond the item's MIT licence listing, so check the skill page for the current terms before you rely on it.

Do I need Reactive Resume to use it?

No. The Reactive Resume MCP server is optional and lets the agent read and save application data. Without it, you paste your experience and any material into the conversation.

Does it need a browsing tool?

A browsing tool is optional but helps with company research. Without one, the skill asks you to paste the job posting and the company's public pages, and it does not invent links or dates.

Can I use it during a live interview?

No. The skill declines to feed answers during a live interview or timed assessment unless the employer allows AI help, because such use can cost an offer. It offers a debrief afterwards instead.

Can it tell me what salary to ask for?

No. Salary numbers, offers and negotiation are handed off to the separate offer-negotiation skill. Interview Prep only drafts a salary answer and covers legal questions by pointing to official sources.

How is it different from a mock interview tool?

Interview Prep builds the prep pack, stories and brief. Scored role-play practice belongs to the separate mock-interview skill.

Our verdict

Interview Prep suits job seekers with an interview in hours or days, career changers who need to turn past work into clear examples, and people who want a cited company summary before they talk to the employer. It is not the right tool for live interview help, salary negotiation, or scored role-play, which are covered by other skills.
