How to use the Google Calendar Event Creator agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The gws-calendar-insert skill teaches an AI agent how to add a new event to your Google Calendar by running the gws command-line tool. This guide is for people who have not used agent skills before and want an assistant that can schedule meetings for them. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to phrase requests that trigger it, and what to check before the agent creates anything.
Quick start
- 1Install gws and set up authentication. Install the gws command-line tool and configure Google account authentication as described in the gws-shared skill.
- 2Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so SKILL.md sits in a skill folder.
- 3Place the skill folder. Move the folder to ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or to .claude/skills/ inside a project. Alternatively, upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 4Ask for an event in plain language. Describe the event, including title, date, start and end times with time zone, and any attendees or video link you want.
- 5Review the confirmation. The agent should ask before creating the event. Check the title, times, attendees and calendar.
- 6Approve or correct. Approve the event so the agent runs gws calendar +insert, or correct any details first.
What is an agent skill and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that gives an AI agent instructions for one task. This skill, gws-calendar-insert, covers one task: creating a new Google Calendar event. Its description in the source is "Google Calendar: Create a new event."
When the skill is active and you ask the agent to schedule something, the agent can fill in the event title (summary), start and end times, location, description, attendee email addresses, and an optional Google Meet video link. It does this by running the gws calendar +insert command.
- Sets the event title, start time and end time (required)
- Optionally sets location, description and the calendar to use (default is primary)
- Adds one or more attendees by email
- Adds a Google Meet video conference link with the --meet flag
What you need before installing
The skill cannot work on its own. It needs the gws command-line tool installed, and Google account authentication configured through gws. The source says the authentication setup is described in the gws-shared skill, so read that skill first. The skill's own file refers to it as a prerequisite.
If the gws-shared file is missing, the source says to run gws generate-skills to create it.
- The gws command-line tool (googleworkspace CLI) installed
- Google Workspace or Google account authentication set up via gws
- The gws-shared skill available, or the gws generate-skills command run to create it
Install the skill
Download the ZIP file from this page and unzip it. The skill is a single file, SKILL.md. Put the unzipped folder in one of these locations:
For a personal skill available across your projects, place it in ~/.claude/skills/. For a skill limited to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
You can also upload the skill in the Claude apps. Go to Settings, then Capabilities, then Skills, and upload it there.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
- Single project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills
Trigger the skill with natural requests
You do not need to type the command yourself. Ask the agent in plain language to schedule something and name the details you care about: the title, when it starts and ends, who to invite, and whether you want a video link. The agent will translate this into the gws command.
The agent needs times it can convert to RFC3339 format, such as 2026-06-17T09:00:00-07:00. If you give a vague time, the agent may ask you to clarify, or it may pick a value you did not intend, so state the date, start time, end time and time zone clearly.
- "Schedule a 30-minute standup tomorrow at 9am Pacific called Standup."
- "Create a review meeting on June 17 from 2pm to 3pm and invite alice@example.com."
- "Set up a Meet call on June 18 at 10am to 10:45am titled Planning, with a video link."
Command reference and examples
The agent runs the command below. The required flags are --summary, --start and --end. The table in the source lists all flags: --calendar (default primary), --summary, --start, --end, --location, --description, --attendee (can be repeated for several people) and --meet.
These are the examples from the source:
- --attendee can be used multiple times to add several people
- --meet automatically adds a Google Meet link to the event
- Use RFC3339 times, for example 2026-06-17T09:00:00-07:00
gws calendar +insert --summary 'Standup' --start '2026-06-17T09:00:00-07:00' --end '2026-06-17T09:30:00-07:00'Safety: confirm before the agent creates an event
This is a write command. It changes your real calendar, and once the event is created, emails are sent to attendees. The skill tells the agent to confirm with you before executing it, so check the title, times, time zone and attendee list in the agent's confirmation message before you approve.
The skill runs scripts and uses the network. Review what the agent proposes, and be especially careful with external attendees, since invitations go out as soon as the event exists.
- Always check attendee emails before approving
- Confirm the time zone and calendar
- Be careful inviting people outside your organisation
Tips for reliable results
State times with a date and time zone so the RFC3339 value is correct. Name the people to invite by full email address rather than by first name. If you want a video call, say so explicitly so the agent uses --meet.
This skill only creates events. To read, edit or delete existing events, use the broader gws-calendar skill instead.
- Give full dates, times and time zones
- Use full email addresses for attendees
- Ask for a video link explicitly to get --meet
- For editing or deleting events, use gws-calendar
What people use it for
- Scheduling a daily or weekly standup on your primary calendar
- Booking a design or code review and inviting named colleagues by email
- Creating a Google Meet call with a video link for a planning session
- Adding a location and description to an event for an in-person appointment
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the Google Calendar event creator agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need before this skill works?
You need the gws command-line tool installed and Google account authentication configured through gws. The source points to the gws-shared skill for authentication details, and says to run gws generate-skills if that file is missing.
Is this skill free?
The source does not state pricing or licence terms beyond the licence listed for the repository, Apache-2.0. Check the repository for details on cost and any requirements of the Google services you use.
Can this skill edit or delete calendar events?
No. The skill is limited to creating new events. For reading, editing or deleting existing events, the source recommends the broader gws-calendar skill.
Will the agent send invitations without asking me?
The skill tells the agent to confirm with you before running the write command. Once the event is created, emails are sent to attendees, so review the attendee list before you approve.
How does this compare with other ways to add events?
This skill lets an AI agent create events from natural requests by running the gws tool. The source does not compare it with other calendar tools, so choose based on whether you already use gws and want an agent to do the scheduling.

Our verdict
This skill suits people who already use or are willing to set up the gws CLI and want an AI agent to schedule new Google Calendar events, including attendees and Meet links. It is a poor fit if you need to read, change or delete events, or if you cannot set up Google authentication, and you should be careful when inviting external people.
