How to use the geo SEO and GEO audit agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The geo skill is an agent skill for Claude Code and compatible agents that audits a website for generative engine optimization (GEO), meaning how likely AI search tools are to find, quote and cite its content, alongside classic SEO basics. It is aimed at marketing agencies, website owners and developers. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it with plain requests, and which safety points to check before running it.
Quick start
- 1Download the ZIP. Get the geo skill ZIP from the geo page on this directory.
- 2Unzip into a skills folder. Place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project.
- 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities and upload the skill under Skills.
- 4Confirm the full repository is available. For full audits, add the agents/ and skills/ folders from the full source repository.
- 5Run a command on a site you own. Type /geo audit followed by the URL, or ask in plain words for an AI search check.
- 6Review the output files. Open GEO-AUDIT-REPORT.md and work through the prioritised action plan.
What the geo skill makes the agent do
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file with instructions that the agent loads when your request matches the skill's description. The geo skill gives the agent a set of GEO and SEO analysis commands. It can run a full audit, score individual pages for AI citation readiness, check whether AI crawlers are allowed by robots.txt, draft an llms.txt file, review structured data (schema markup), scan brand mentions, and write client-ready reports.
The skill describes itself as covering 14 sub-skills and 18 commands. Its output is written to files such as GEO-AUDIT-REPORT.md for a full audit and llms.txt for the llms.txt command.
- Full audit with a composite GEO score from 0 to 100
- Citability scoring of passages for AI answers
- AI crawler access check via robots.txt
- llms.txt analysis or generation
- Schema markup detection, validation and generation
- Technical SEO, content quality and E-E-A-T review
- Client-ready reports, proposals and monthly comparison reports
Install the geo skill
Download the ZIP file from the geo page on this directory and unzip it. To make the skill available across all your projects, place the unzipped folder in ~/.claude/skills/. To limit it to one project, place it in that project's .claude/skills/ folder.
If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/ (available in every project)
- Project install: the .claude/skills/ folder inside one project
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the skill
Know what the reviewed file includes before you rely on it
The skill's SKILL.md file refers to subagent files in agents/ and skills/ folders. Those folders are not in the single SKILL.md file reviewed here, so a full audit that delegates to parallel subagents needs the full repository from the source project. Installing only the ZIP from this page may not give you every command in working form.
The report-pdf command may also need PDF tooling that the reviewed file does not describe.
- Needed: Claude Code or a compatible agent with Bash, Read, Write, WebFetch and Grep tools
- Needed: network access to fetch the target website
- Needed for full audits: the agents/ and skills/ folders from the full repository
- May be needed for report-pdf: extra PDF tooling not described in the file
Trigger the skill with commands or natural requests
You can call a command directly, such as /geo audit followed by the site address. The skill also loads when your request contains words from its description, including 'geo', 'seo', 'audit', 'AI search', 'llms.txt', 'schema', 'brand mentions' or 'GEO report', or when you paste any URL for analysis.
Use a specific command when you know the result you want. Use a plain request when you are less sure which check you need.
- /geo audit https://example.com for a full audit
- /geo citability https://example.com to score content for AI citation readiness
- /geo crawlers https://example.com to see whether AI crawlers are allowed
- /geo llmstxt https://example.com to analyse or generate an llms.txt file
- /geo schema https://example.com to check structured data
- /geo report https://example.com for a client-ready deliverable
- Plain request: 'Check whether ChatGPT and Perplexity crawlers can read my site'
/geo audit <url>Run a full audit and read the output
A full audit runs in phases. The agent first fetches the homepage, detects the business type (SaaS, Local Service, E-commerce, Publisher, Agency or Other), and collects key pages from sitemap.xml or internal links, up to 50 pages. It then launches five analysis workers in parallel covering AI visibility, platform analysis, technical SEO, content and schema. Finally it calculates the composite score and writes a prioritised action plan.
The composite score weights categories as follows: AI Citability and Visibility 25%, Brand Authority Signals 20%, Content Quality and E-E-A-T 20%, Technical Foundations 15%, Structured Data 10%, and Platform Optimization 10%. These weights are the tool's own judgement, not an industry standard.
- Start with the priority list in GEO-AUDIT-REPORT.md
- Check the AI crawler results first if AI visibility is your concern
- Treat the score as a relative guide to fix priorities, not a measured ranking
Use the skill for single pages, schema and llms.txt
For a narrow question, a single command is faster than a full audit. Use /geo page for a deep look at one URL, /geo schema to detect and validate JSON-LD and generate structured data, and /geo llmstxt to analyse or create an llms.txt file. The llms.txt output is named llms.txt so you can deploy it to your site.
Business type affects advice. The skill suggests LocalBusiness schema and Google Business Profile work for local businesses, SoftwareApplication schema for SaaS, and Product schema with review aggregation for e-commerce.
- /geo page https://example.com/services for one page in depth
- /geo schema https://example.com to validate and generate JSON-LD
- /geo llmstxt https://example.com to produce a deployable llms.txt
/geo llmstxt <url>Safety notes: scripts, network and permission
The skill runs scripts and uses the network. It fetches pages from the target site and, according to its description, may scan third-party platforms for brand mentions. Only run audits on sites you own or have permission to analyse.
The skill's allowed tools include Bash and Write, so the agent can run commands and create files in your working folder. Review the files it writes, and review any commands it proposes, before you accept them.
- Only audit sites you own or have written permission to analyse
- Expect outbound requests to the target site and possibly third-party platforms
- Check written files and proposed commands before approving them
What people use it for
- A marketing agency preparing a GEO or SEO audit and proposal for a client using /geo audit and /geo proposal.
- A website owner checking whether AI crawlers are allowed to read their pages with /geo crawlers.
- A developer generating an llms.txt file with /geo llmstxt and adding structured data with /geo schema.
- An agency producing a monthly progress comparison with /geo compare.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the geo skill?
Download the ZIP from the geo page on this directory and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for all projects, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for one project. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.
Is the geo skill free to use?
The skill is published under the MIT licence, as stated on this page. Check the licence file in the source repository for the full terms. This guide does not state any price.
What do I need to run the geo skill?
You need Claude Code or a compatible agent with Bash, Read, Write, WebFetch and Grep tools, plus network access to the target site. Full audits also need the agents/ and skills/ folders from the full repository, which were not in the reviewed file.
Why does my full audit fail or miss parts?
The SKILL.md file delegates work to subagent files in agents/ and skills/ folders. If those folders are missing, parallel analysis cannot run as described, so install the full repository rather than the single file. The report-pdf command may also need PDF tools that the file does not describe.
Can the geo skill guarantee my site will appear in AI answers?
No. The skill judges how likely AI search tools are to find and cite content, and its scoring weights are its own judgement. The market statistics it contains are cited from third parties and are not guarantees of results.
How does geo compare with other SEO audit tools?
The skill focuses on AI search visibility (citability, AI crawler access, llms.txt, brand mentions) and also covers classic technical SEO, content and schema. Other SEO tools may offer deeper crawling or ranking data that this file does not describe, so compare features against your needs.

Our verdict
Choose the geo skill if you are an agency building GEO or SEO audits and proposals, or a site owner or developer who wants to check AI crawler access, llms.txt and structured data. Pick something else if you need guaranteed AI rankings, you cannot install the full repository with its subagent folders, or you want a tool that makes no network requests.
