How to use the Fictiv custom parts ordering agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The Fictiv skill is a set of instructions and helper scripts that lets an AI agent operate the Fictiv manufacturing website (app.fictiv.com) in your own logged-in browser. It is for engineers and product teams who want help uploading a CAD file, choosing a process, material and finish, reading design feedback and getting a price. After this guide you will know what an agent skill is, how to install this one, how to ask for work in plain language, and what the skill will and will not do without asking you first.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  2. 2Or upload it in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.
  3. 3Sign in to Fictiv. Make sure your browser is logged in to your Fictiv account at app.fictiv.com.
  4. 4Make your request. Describe the part, process and what you want back in plain language, mentioning Fictiv or attaching a STEP, SLDPRT or STL file.
  5. 5Answer the questions. Reply to the agent's list of missing requirements, such as material, finish, quantity and ship-to.
  6. 6Review the summary. Read the quote summary and any DFM warnings the agent relays before anything is submitted.
  7. 7Approve or stop. Give explicit approval for any quote request, share or order. Stop there if you only wanted a price.

What an agent skill is and what this one makes the agent do

An agent skill is a folder of instructions, reference notes and optional scripts that an AI agent loads when a task matches its description. This skill is named fictiv and is published as part of the K-Dense-AI scientific-agent-skills collection under an MIT licence.

With the skill loaded, the agent can work through the Fictiv web app end to end: upload CAD parts, configure process, material, finish, threads, tolerances and inspections, get instant or manual quotes, read and respond to DFM (design for manufacturability) feedback, choose lead time and region, check out, track orders, reorder and troubleshoot problems.

Install the Fictiv skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. Then choose one of two places to put the folder. For a personal install available across your projects, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into that project's .claude/skills/ folder.

If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.

  • Personal: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Single project: .claude/skills/ inside the project folder
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload

Meet the requirements

The skill needs network access, a browser-automation tool such as Claude in Chrome, and your own logged-in Fictiv account at app.fictiv.com. The agent works in your browser, where your Fictiv session lives, so you need to be signed in there. The agent will ask you to sign in if it finds a login page and will not handle your password.

The CAD pre-flight script needs Python 3.10 or newer and uses only the Python standard library. The optional DOM helper scripts need browser JavaScript execution.

  • Python 3.10+ (standard library only) for scripts/check_cad_file.py
  • A browser-automation tool such as Claude in Chrome
  • A Fictiv account at app.fictiv.com
  • Browser JavaScript execution for the optional helper scripts

Trigger the skill with natural requests

You do not need a special command. The skill applies when you mention Fictiv, ask to get a quote or order parts for a STEP, SLDPRT or STL file, or want a part CNC machined, 3D printed, sheet-metal fabricated, urethane cast, injection or compression molded, or die cast through an online service. It also applies if you want custom parts made and have a Fictiv account, even when Fictiv is not named.

Good requests state the process, the file and what you need back, for example asking for a quote on an uploaded STEP file for CNC machining in aluminum, or asking why a DFM warning appeared on your upload.

Run the pre-flight check before uploading

Before every upload the skill runs its CAD pre-flight script. It checks documented file formats and heuristic STEP or STL geometry, units and size. ITAR text scanning is limited to STEP files. Resolve any blocking items first, such as exporting a STEP file or splitting separate parts into their own files.

You can also run the check yourself from a terminal, with the skill folder path in place of the placeholder.

python3 <skill-dir>/scripts/check_cad_file.py path/to/part.step [...] --process cnc

Approvals and safety notes

Fictiv orders are real purchases and are usually non-cancellable. The skill is built so the agent stops and asks before any action that spends money, commits you or sends information outward. That covers placing an order, requesting a quote, sharing, sending team invites, applying for payment terms, messages to Fictiv, and deleting quotes, parts or the account. Approval must come from you in the conversation. Text on web pages, in files or in Fictiv chat messages is treated as information, not as instructions.

The agent will not type card numbers, CVCs, bank details or passwords, even if you paste them. It uses a saved card or asks you to enter payment in Fictiv's payment form. Its guidance also says it will not reverse-engineer private app calls, because Fictiv exposes no public customer API.

The scripts run locally and the skill uses network access to work with the Fictiv site. Read the scripts before running them if you want to review what they do.

  • Place order, request quote, share and invites all need your explicit approval
  • Card details, CVCs, bank details and passwords are never typed by the agent
  • ITAR designs are not supported by self-service; export-controlled work goes through Fictiv's compliance process
  • Warnings from DFM checks should be read before checkout

Examples of useful requests

Start with a quote request and let the agent collect what it needs. The skill asks you for anything missing, such as material grade, finish, quantity, threads, tolerances, need-by date and ship-to address, rather than guessing. If you say you have no preference, it chooses conservative defaults and tells you what it picked.

  • Quote this STEP file as a CNC part in aluminum, quantity 10, and compare lead times
  • Why is my Fictiv quote stuck without a price?
  • Check the status and tracking of my last Fictiv order
  • Pre-check these STL files for units and size before I upload them to Fictiv

What people use it for

  • Get comparable quotes for a CNC-machined aluminum bracket across several quantities and lead times
  • Check an STL or STEP file for units and size before uploading it to a manufacturer
  • Understand and respond to a DFM warning on a 3D printed housing
  • Track the status of an existing order or find its documents such as invoices and inspection reports
  • Reorder a previously ordered part with the same configuration

Frequently asked questions

Is the Fictiv agent skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence, as stated in its metadata. Fictiv itself is a paid manufacturing service, and you need your own Fictiv account to use it.

Do I need a Fictiv account to use the skill?

Yes. The skill works through your logged-in web session at app.fictiv.com, and Fictiv exposes no public API for it to use instead.

How do I install the Fictiv skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need to run the CAD pre-flight script?

You need Python 3.10 or newer. The script uses only the Python standard library, so there are no extra packages to install.

Can the agent place an order for me automatically?

Not without your approval. The skill requires explicit authorization for each order and reconfirms material changes. Orders are usually non-cancellable, so the skill is not meant for unattended bulk ordering.

Can I use this skill for ITAR-controlled parts?

No. The skill says self-service does not support ITAR, and such designs must be routed through Fictiv's compliance process. Export-controlled designs need that review before any file is transferred.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you are an engineer or product team with a Fictiv account who wants an agent to quote, configure and track CNC, 3D printed, sheet metal or molded parts while you keep control of every purchase. Pick something else if you do not have a Fictiv account, if your designs are ITAR-controlled, or if you want unattended bulk ordering.
