How to use the Engineering Team Skills Index agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The engineering-skills file is an index for a bundle of 32 engineering skills, covering areas such as architecture, frontend, backend, QA, DevOps, security, data and AI/ML. An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file that tells an AI coding agent how to handle a certain kind of task. This guide shows you how to install the index, how to ask for it in plain language, and what to check before running the scripts it points to.

Quick start

  1. 1Download the ZIP. Download the engineering-skills ZIP from our page.
  2. 2Unzip to the skills folder. Unzip into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder.
  3. 3Or upload in the Claude apps. In the Claude apps, go to Settings → Capabilities → Skills and upload the skill.
  4. 4Start a new session. Open your agent runtime so it can read the newly installed SKILL.md file.
  5. 5Ask which specialist fits. Describe your engineering task in plain language and ask which bundled skill to use.
  6. 6Load only that specialist. Let the agent read the one specialist SKILL.md that matches, rather than the whole bundle.
  7. 7Review scripts before running. Run --help and review the source of any bundled Python script before the agent executes it.

What an agent skill is and what this index does

An agent skill is a set of instructions, stored as a SKILL.md file, that an agent runtime such as Claude Code or Codex CLI can read when a task matches it. The engineering-skills index does not perform engineering work itself. It lists the specialist skills in the engineering-team bundle and helps the agent choose the one that fits a task.

The index is designed so the agent loads only the single specialist SKILL.md it needs, not the whole bundle. The source says to load only the one specialist skill you need and never bulk-load the bundle.

  • Core engineering: 13 skills, such as Senior Architect, Senior Frontend, Senior Backend, Senior QA and Senior DevOps.
  • AI/ML/Data: 5 skills, such as Senior Data Engineer and Senior ML Engineer.
  • Specialized tools: 5 skills, such as Playwright Pro, Stripe Integration and Incident Commander.

Install the engineering-skills index

There are two routes. For Claude Code, download the ZIP from our page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder to share it with one repository. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

For Codex CLI, the source gives this install command using npx and the agent-skills-cli package.

  • Claude Code, personal: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
  • Claude Code, project: unzip into .claude/skills/ inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload
npx agent-skills-cli add alirezarezvani/claude-skills/engineering-team

Pick and load one specialist skill

The source's Claude Code quick start reads a single specialist file directly, shown here for the Senior Fullstack skill. Replace the path with the specialist you need from the index.

Each specialist lives in its own folder, such as senior-architect/ or senior-qa/. Browse the tables in the index to find the closest match to your task, then load that one SKILL.md.

/read engineering-team/skills/senior-fullstack/SKILL.md

Trigger it with natural requests

You do not need special syntax. Describe the engineering job you have and say you want help choosing or using a role. The index's description says it is meant for browsing or choosing among engineering-team role skills, so requests that ask which specialist fits are the natural fit.

Name the area of work, such as frontend, security, data pipelines or test coverage, so the agent can match it to the right specialist.

  • Which of your engineering skills fits a React and Next.js frontend review?
  • I need a specialist for designing a system architecture. Which skill should I load?
  • Help me pick an engineering skill for writing end-to-end Playwright tests.
  • Which bundled skill covers Stripe webhook integration?

Run the bundled Python tools safely

The source says the bundled tools are stdlib-only, so they need Python 3 but no pip install. Each tool can be run with a --help flag to see its options before you use it. The source also notes that scripts include embedded samples for demo mode.

Treat the scripts as code you should review. The source states that the bundle includes scripts the agent may execute, and this index file does not describe their behavior in detail. The index itself does not use the network, but individual specialist skills are not described here, so check them before relying on them.

  • Confirm Python 3 is installed.
  • Run --help on a script before running it on real work.
  • Review a script's source before letting the agent execute it.
  • Keep scripts away from production data until you understand what they do.
python3 <skill>/scripts/<tool>.py --help

Tips for getting good results

Keep the bundle loaded in a way that does not pull in everything at once. The index's rules say to use Python tools for analysis and scaffolding rather than manual judgment, and to check CLAUDE.md for tool usage examples and workflows.

If you are evaluating the bundle for a team, read the index and the specialist folders you are considering before adopting them.

  • Name a specific task and area so the agent picks one specialist.
  • Check CLAUDE.md in your project for tool usage examples.
  • Use the index to compare options before committing to a specialist.

What people use it for

  • Choosing a frontend specialist for a React and Next.js codebase.
  • Finding a QA specialist for test generation and coverage analysis.
  • Picking a DevOps specialist for CI/CD and container work.
  • Locating a Stripe or AWS specialist before starting an integration.
  • Comparing data and AI/ML specialists before a modelling project.

Frequently asked questions

Is the engineering-skills agent skill free to use?

The source lists the licence as MIT. Check the licence file in the repository for the full terms before you redistribute or modify it.

What do I need to run it?

You need an agent runtime that reads SKILL.md files, such as Claude Code or Codex CLI. The bundled Python scripts need Python 3 and use only the standard library, so no pip install is needed. The Codex CLI install path uses npx and the agent-skills-cli package.

Where do I put the skill in Claude Code?

Unzip the downloaded ZIP into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder for a single project. You can also upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.

How do I install it for Codex CLI?

The source gives the command npx agent-skills-cli add alirezarezvani/claude-skills/engineering-team. Run it with npx and the agent-skills-cli package available.

Does this skill run code or use the internet?

The source says it runs scripts and does not use the network. The bundle includes scripts the agent may execute, and the index does not describe their behaviour in detail, so review them before running.

What is the difference between this index and a specialist skill?

The index lists and points to 32 engineering skills and helps choose one. A specialist skill such as Senior QA or Senior DevOps holds the detailed instructions for a particular job, and the agent should load only the one you need.

Our verdict

This index is useful if you want a menu of specialist engineering roles for an AI coding agent, or if you are comparing which bundled skills to adopt. It is not a hands-on tool by itself, and it is not the right choice if you expect the bundled scripts to run without you reviewing them first.
