How to use the E-commerce SEO Analysis agent skill

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The E-commerce SEO Analysis skill (skill name seo-ecommerce) lets an AI agent review a store or product page for search engine optimization and score it. It is written for store owners and SEO specialists who work on product listings and catalogs. After this guide you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for an audit in plain language, and what extra setup the live marketplace features need.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the seo-ecommerce ZIP from this page and unzip it so the skill folder is complete.
  2. 2Place the folder or upload it. Copy the folder into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP in Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
  3. 3Run a page audit. Ask the agent to audit a product page URL, or use /seo ecommerce <url>. This works without any DataForSEO account.
  4. 4Review the score and fixes. Read the weighted score and the checklist failures, then decide which fixes to make on your site yourself.
  5. 5Add DataForSEO only if you need live data. If you want Google Shopping or Amazon data, add your Merchant API credentials and approve the cost shown before each call.

What is an agent skill, and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder of instructions and supporting files that an AI agent loads when a task matches the skill. This one is defined in a SKILL.md file and is scoped to stores, catalogs, and product listings. It is not meant for blogs or other non-store websites.

Without DataForSEO, the agent can fetch and parse a product page and check it for on-page SEO quality. With an optional DataForSEO Merchant API account, it can also pull live Google Shopping and Amazon listings and compare prices, sellers, ratings, and keyword gaps.

  • Product page audit: titles, meta descriptions, headings, images, internal links, content quality, and technical signals
  • Product schema check: validation and enhancement against Google's current required fields
  • Google Shopping analysis: price distribution, seller landscape, and listing quality (needs DataForSEO)
  • Amazon comparison and keyword gap analysis between organic search and Shopping visibility (needs DataForSEO)

How do you install the seo-ecommerce skill?

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the resulting skill folder in one of two places: your personal skills folder at ~/.claude/skills/, or a project's .claude/skills/ folder if you want the skill available only in that project.

If you use the Claude apps instead, open Settings, go to Capabilities, then Skills, and upload the ZIP there. Once the skill is installed, you do not need to load it manually for each task; the agent uses it when a request matches.

  • Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/
  • Project install: the .claude/skills/ folder inside your project
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

How do you trigger the skill with a natural request?

You can ask in plain language, or use the explicit command form. The skill accepts a URL or a keyword as its argument. Good requests name the product page or category and say what you want back, for example a score, a list of fixes, or a price comparison.

The skill's command reference lists four forms. The full audit and schema check work without DataForSEO. The Shopping, Amazon, and gap commands need a DataForSEO account.

  • 'Audit this product page for SEO and give it a score: https://example-store.com/product/123'
  • 'Check the Product schema on this page and tell me which required fields are missing.'
  • 'Compare Google Shopping and Amazon listings for trail running headlamps and summarize price and seller spread.' (needs DataForSEO)
  • 'Find keyword gaps between organic rankings and Shopping visibility for example-store.com.' (needs DataForSEO and seo-dataforseo)
/seo ecommerce <url>

What does a product page audit check?

For a single product page, the agent fetches the page, parses the SEO elements, and then checks product-specific signals. The checklist covers the title tag, meta description, heading structure, product images, internal linking, and content quality. It also looks at technical factors such as page speed, mobile rendering, and canonical tags.

The result is a weighted score. Schema completeness counts for 25%, image optimization 20%, content quality 20%, title and meta 15%, internal linking 10%, and technical 10%. Ask the agent for the breakdown so you can see which category is pulling the score down.

  • Title: contains the primary product keyword and brand, under 60 characters
  • Meta description: keyword, a benefit, a call to action, and under 155 characters
  • Images: descriptive file names, alt text with product name and feature, at least 3 per product
  • Content: unique description of 200+ words, a specs table, and on-page user reviews

How do the live Google Shopping and Amazon features work?

These features call the DataForSEO Merchant API and require your own account and credentials. The skill runs a product search for a keyword, looks at sellers and merchant ratings, and returns analysis such as price percentiles, price outliers, and free shipping share. Currency is normalized to USD unless you specify another.

For a cross-marketplace view, the compare command produces a table of average price, median rating, review count, top seller share, and free shipping percentage for Google Shopping and Amazon side by side. The Amazon endpoints always require your approval before each call.

  • Google Shopping search: pricing and seller analysis, requires DataForSEO
  • Amazon search and compare: cross-marketplace report, requires DataForSEO and approval for each call
  • Keyword gaps: classifies keywords as Organic Only, Shopping Only, Both Present, or Neither
  • Schema validation: works without DataForSEO
"${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_ROOT}/scripts/claude-seo" run dataforseo_merchant.py compare "<keyword>"

What do you need before you start?

For the on-page audit and schema checks, you need the agent set up to run the Python scripts that come with the skill through the bundled claude-seo runner. The agent executes those scripts itself. The skill also uses the network, because it fetches live pages.

For live marketplace data, you need a DataForSEO Merchant API account and its credentials. Keyword gap analysis also uses the seo-dataforseo skill for organic ranking data. Every Merchant API call goes through a cost check first, and the skill logs the cost after each call.

  • Required for audits: Python scripts run through the bundled runner
  • Optional: DataForSEO Merchant API account and credentials for Google Shopping and Amazon
  • Optional: seo-dataforseo skill for organic rankings in keyword gap analysis

What safety points should you know about?

This skill runs scripts and makes network requests. Review the files before you install it if your organization requires that, and only run it on pages and keywords you are allowed to analyze. Each Merchant API call is checked by a cost guardrail that can return approved, needs approval, or blocked, and you should read the cost before approving.

The skill produces analysis and recommendations only. It does not edit live pages. Any changes to titles, schema, images, or links are yours to make and test.

  • Scripts are executed by the agent, so install only versions you trust
  • Live commands make network calls and some cost money through DataForSEO
  • Amazon calls always need your approval
  • Changes to your store are made by you, not by the skill

What people use it for

  • Auditing the titles, descriptions, and image alt text across a store's key product pages
  • Checking Product schema on a page and listing which required or recommended fields are missing
  • Comparing average price and seller spread for a product category on Google Shopping and Amazon
  • Finding keywords that rank in organic search but have no Shopping presence, or the reverse

Frequently asked questions

Is the seo-ecommerce skill free?

The skill itself is released under the MIT licence. The on-page audit and schema checks work without a DataForSEO account. Live Google Shopping and Amazon commands need a paid DataForSEO Merchant API account, and the skill checks the cost before each call.

What do I need to install the seo-ecommerce skill?

Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills. The agent also needs to be able to run the bundled Python scripts.

Does the skill work without DataForSEO?

Yes. The product page analysis and the Product schema check run without DataForSEO. Only the Google Shopping, Amazon, and keyword gap commands require a DataForSEO Merchant API account.

Why won't the Amazon or Shopping commands run for me?

Those commands call a paid API and need your own DataForSEO credentials. Without an account they will not work. Check that the cost guardrail returned approved or that you approved the cost when asked.

Can the skill change my product pages automatically?

No. The skill produces analysis and recommendations only. Any edits to titles, descriptions, images, or schema must be made by you.

How does this compare with other SEO tools?

This skill is scoped to stores, catalogs, and product listings, and it runs inside an agent. It is not a general SEO tool for blogs or non-store sites. If you need site-wide crawling or content tools, pick a tool built for that purpose.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you run an online store or manage a product catalog and want an agent to audit product pages and compare Google Shopping and Amazon visibility, especially if you already have or are willing to pay for a DataForSEO Merchant API account. Pick something else if your site is a blog or non-store website, or if you need the tool to edit your pages for you.
