How to use the Cloudflare Registrar agent skill: check, list and buy domains

Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data

The cloudflare-registrar skill teaches an AI agent to search for domain names, see their prices, list domains already registered in your Cloudflare account and register new ones through Cloudflare Registrar. It is written for people who already manage domains in Cloudflare and want to do this from a terminal or an agent. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for it in plain language and what it needs before it works.

Quick start

  1. 1Download and unzip. Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it so the folder contains SKILL.md.
  2. 2Place the folder. Move it to ~/.claude/skills/cloudflare-registrar/ for all projects, or to .claude/skills/ inside one project. You can also upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
  3. 3Install mcporter. Make sure mcporter is available through npx, since the skill calls it for every operation.
  4. 4Configure the Cloudflare MCP server. Set up an MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw so the skill can reach Cloudflare's API.
  5. 5Set environment variables. Set OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID and OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN, with the token having registrar permissions.
  6. 6Ask for a check. Request an availability and price check in plain language to confirm everything works before any purchase.
  7. 7Confirm any purchase. When the agent asks, review the domain and price, then give explicit confirmation only if you want to buy it.

What is an agent skill and what does this one do?

An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. The file gives an AI agent instructions for one kind of task, so the agent knows which commands to run and which rules to follow. This skill covers Cloudflare Registrar: domain availability, pricing, listing and registration.

Once installed, the agent can check whether names are available and what they cost, list the domains already registered in a Cloudflare account and register a new domain. It does this by calling Cloudflare's API through the mcporter tool and a preconfigured Cloudflare MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw, using the account ID and API token stored in environment variables.

Install the cloudflare-registrar skill

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it. The folder you get contains SKILL.md. Put that folder in one of these places:

For all of your projects, unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, unzip it into the project's .claude/skills/ folder. You can also upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

  • Personal: ~/.claude/skills/cloudflare-registrar/
  • Project only: .claude/skills/cloudflare-registrar/
  • Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP

Set up the requirements

The skill will not work until four things are in place. It needs mcporter, which runs through npx. It needs a configured Cloudflare MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw. It needs your Cloudflare account ID in the environment variable OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID. And it needs a Cloudflare API token with registrar permissions in OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN.

The skill says to export only the Cloudflare variables needed for one command, and never to print tokens.

  • mcporter, run via npx
  • MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw
  • OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID set to your account ID
  • OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN set to a token with registrar permissions

Ask the agent for what you need

You do not need to type the commands yourself. Describe the task in plain language and mention domains or Cloudflare Registrar so the agent picks up the skill. Examples of requests that match the skill's purpose include asking whether a name is free, asking what a domain costs, asking which domains are in your Cloudflare account, or asking to register a specific domain.

Before the agent buys anything, the skill requires it to re-check availability and then ask you for explicit confirmation. Answer that question deliberately.

  • Is example.com available through Cloudflare Registrar, and what does it cost?
  • List the domains registered in my Cloudflare account.
  • Register myproject.dev. Check it first and ask me before purchasing.

Commands the skill uses

Under the hood, the agent sends requests to Cloudflare's API through mcporter. The skill's three operations are a domain check, a registration and a list of registrations. The check and list use the account path and read-only or check requests, while registration is a billable POST. The agent runs the check immediately before any registration.

Here is the domain check the skill uses:

npx mcporter call cloudflare-openclaw.execute code='async () => { return cloudflare.request({ method: "POST", path: `/accounts/${accountId}/registrar/domain-check`, body: { domains: ["example.com"] } }); }'

Safety: scripts, network and purchases

This skill runs scripts and uses the network. Every operation calls Cloudflare's API with your credentials, so only install it if you trust the source and the Cloudflare account it will use.

The main safety feature is the confirmation gate. Registration is billable and non-refundable, so the skill tells the agent to ask for explicit confirmation before the registration request. The skill's rules also say to always run the domain check right before registering. Do not use this skill in unattended automation that buys domains without a person reviewing each purchase, because the gate depends on the agent pausing for you.

  • Registration is billable and non-refundable
  • The agent must ask for explicit confirmation before registering
  • The agent re-checks availability right before buying
  • Tokens are not to be printed

What people use it for

  • Checking whether a project name is free and what it costs before committing to it.
  • Listing the domains already registered in a Cloudflare account to review renewals.
  • Registering a new domain from the terminal after a re-check and a confirmation prompt.
  • Running a quick availability search for several candidate names in one request.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install the cloudflare-registrar skill?

Download the skill ZIP from this page and unzip it so the folder contains SKILL.md. Place it in ~/.claude/skills/cloudflare-registrar/ for all projects or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload the ZIP in the Claude apps under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.

What do I need before the skill works?

You need mcporter run through npx, a configured Cloudflare MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw, your account ID in OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID, and a Cloudflare API token with registrar permissions in OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN. Without a Cloudflare account and token the skill cannot do anything.

Is the cloudflare-registrar skill free?

The skill is published under the MIT licence. The source does not state any prices for Cloudflare Registrar itself, and registrations you make are billable and non-refundable.

Will the agent buy a domain without asking me?

No. The skill tells the agent to ask for explicit confirmation before the registration request and to re-run the domain check right before buying. Keep a person in the loop for every purchase.

What are the alternatives to this skill?

The source does not compare this skill with others. If you do not use Cloudflare, or you want to buy domains through a different registrar, this skill will not help. You can still use Cloudflare's dashboard or API directly.

Why does the skill say the token is missing or the command fails?

Check that OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_ACCOUNT_ID and OPENCLAW_CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN are set, that the token has registrar permissions, that mcporter runs through npx and that an MCP server named cloudflare-openclaw is configured. Those four items are the only requirements the source lists.

Our verdict

Use this skill if you already manage domains in Cloudflare and want an agent to search, price and buy names with a confirmation step before each billable purchase. Pick something else if you have no Cloudflare account or API token, or if you need unattended automation that buys domains without a human reviewing each one.
