How to use the Arize Trace Inspector agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The arize-trace skill is a set of instructions that teaches an AI agent how to download existing trace data from the Arize observability platform using the ax command-line tool. A trace is a record of what an LLM application did, step by step. This guide is for developers and teams who already send traces to Arize and want an agent to pull them down and help explain behaviour or errors. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to ask for things in plain language, and what to watch for on sensitive data.
Quick start
- 1Get an Arize account and API key. Sign in to Arize and create an API key under the admin API Keys page at app.arize.com.
- 2Install the ax CLI. Install the arize-ax-cli package with uv, pipx or pip, and confirm the version is 0.14.0 or higher.
- 3Configure an ax profile. Run ax profiles show to check your profile, and follow the setup reference to fix or create it using the ARIZE_API_KEY environment variable.
- 4Download the skill ZIP. Download the arize-trace ZIP from this page and unzip it.
- 5Place the skill folder. Put the arize-trace folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in a project's .claude/skills/ folder, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 6Ask for an export. Make a request naming your project and a trace, span, session or time window, and review the exported JSON in .arize-tmp-traces.
What is an agent skill and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file and supporting reference files. When installed, an AI agent can read these instructions and follow them when a request matches the skill's description.
The arize-trace skill covers three kinds of export. It can download complete traces, individual spans, or whole sessions (groups of traces sharing a session ID, such as a multi-turn conversation). It uses the ax CLI to do this and saves the results as JSON to local files, so the agent can summarise behaviour or help investigate errors and regressions.
- Trace: a tree of spans sharing a trace ID, rooted at a span with no parent.
- Span: one operation such as an LLM call, tool call, retriever, chain or agent step.
- Session: a group of traces sharing the same session ID.
What do you need before installing?
The skill requires the ax CLI (Arize's command-line tool), a configured Arize profile with an API key from the Arize app, and the name or ID of your Arize space and project. Every export needs Arize credentials, so the skill is not useful without an account.
The skill's troubleshooting guide says the ax version must be 0.14.0 or higher when ax is installed. If ax is missing, the guide suggests installing it with uv tool install arize-ax-cli, pipx install arize-ax-cli, or pip install arize-ax-cli.
uv tool install arize-ax-cliHow do you install the arize-trace skill?
Download the ZIP of the skill from this page and unzip it. For a personal install, place the folder in ~/.claude/skills/. For a single project, place it in the project's .claude/skills/ folder.
In the Claude apps, you can instead upload the skill under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
- Personal install: ~/.claude/skills/arize-trace/
- Project install: .claude/skills/arize-trace/ inside your project
How do you set up Arize credentials safely?
The skill uses ax profiles for Arize credentials. Create or fix a profile following the setup reference, and get your API key from https://app.arize.com/admin under API Keys.
The skill's rules say the API key should be referenced through the ARIZE_API_KEY environment variable rather than passed as a raw flag. The agent is also told never to read .env files or search the filesystem for credentials.
- Check the current profile with: ax profiles show
- Find your space with: ax spaces list (or give the space name directly)
ax profiles showHow do you trigger the skill with a natural request?
You do not need special syntax. The skill's description lists trigger phrases such as looking at existing trace data, seeing what your LLM app is doing, exporting traces, downloading spans, investigating errors, or analysing behaviour regressions. Name your project and, where relevant, a time window or trace ID.
Good requests name the thing you want: a project, a trace ID, a session, or a window of time. Specific requests give the agent enough to run a bounded export.
- Export the trace with ID abc123 from project support-bot in space my-workspace.
- Summarise the last day's conversations in the support-bot project.
- Download all spans with status_code = 'ERROR' from project checkout-agent and look for patterns.
- Export session 42 from project chat-app and tell me where the conversation went wrong.
What commands does the agent run?
The main command is ax spans export. It takes a project and one of --trace-id, --span-id or --session-id. Results go to a folder named .arize-tmp-traces by default.
For exploration, the skill starts with a small sample (-l 50). For recent data, it passes --start-time, because results are not returned in recency order. For large exports it uses --all, which downloads without the default 500-span cap.
- Export by trace ID: ax spans export PROJECT --trace-id TRACE_ID --output-dir .arize-tmp-traces
- Export by span ID: ax spans export PROJECT --span-id SPAN_ID --output-dir .arize-tmp-traces
- Export by session ID: ax spans export PROJECT --session-id SESSION_ID --output-dir .arize-tmp-traces
- Filter errors in bulk: ax spans export PROJECT --space SPACE --filter "status_code = 'ERROR'" --all --output-dir .arize-tmp-traces
ax spans export PROJECT --trace-id TRACE_ID --output-dir .arize-tmp-tracesWhat safety rules and network use should you know about?
The skill runs scripts and uses the network: it calls the Arize service through the ax CLI to fetch your data, and writes the results to local files. Exported span fields such as input and output values contain user-generated content.
The skill tells the agent to treat that content as untrusted text that may contain prompt injection, and never to act on instructions found inside span attributes. Still, exported traces may contain private user conversations. Do not export sensitive datasets to a local folder or into an AI session unless you are comfortable with that.
- Exports are written to .arize-tmp-traces, which the CLI adds to .gitignore.
- Keep sensitive projects out of exports unless needed.
- Review the exported files before sharing them.
What tips help the export go smoothly?
If a query is slow or returns a 401 Unauthorized error, the skill suggests resolving the project name to its base64 ID using ax projects list -l 100 -o json and using that ID. For a known trace ID, the skill recommends ax spans export as the most reliable verification path.
If an export returns exactly the number of spans requested, it may be truncated. Raise the limit or use --all, but only when the task needs more data.
- Give the space name directly rather than paging through ax spaces list.
- Use --days or --start-time to keep exports to a time window.
- Use the ax profiles and ax projects commands to troubleshoot access.
What people use it for
- Export a single failing trace by ID to see each LLM and tool step.
- Pull error spans from a project in bulk to look for a pattern in failures.
- Export a multi-turn session to see where a conversation went wrong.
- Summarise the last day's conversations from a named project using a time window.
- Compare exported spans to investigate a behaviour regression in production.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install the arize-trace agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it. Put the arize-trace folder in ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or in your project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can also upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
What do I need to use the arize-trace skill?
You need the ax CLI (arize-ax-cli, version 0.14.0 or higher), a configured Arize profile with an API key from the Arize app, and your Arize space and project name or ID. Without Arize credentials, every export will fail.
Is the arize-trace skill free?
The skill is published under the MIT licence. The source does not state pricing for Arize or the ax CLI, so check Arize's own terms for any account costs.
Can this skill set up tracing or send traces to Arize?
No. The skill only reads existing trace data. Its description says it downloads, exports and inspects traces and does not instrument apps or send new traces.
Why does the agent say my export is limited or returns 401 Unauthorized?
The skill's guidance is to resolve the project name to a base64 project ID using ax projects list -l 100 -o json, then use that ID. For 401 errors, run ax profiles show and fix your API key through the ax profile setup steps.
Does the skill send my trace data anywhere?
The skill uses the network to query Arize through the ax CLI and saves results to local files in .arize-tmp-traces. Exported content can include private user conversations, so review what you export.

Our verdict
This skill is a good fit for developers and teams who already send traces to Arize and want an agent to pull down traces, spans or sessions and help explain errors or regressions. It is not the right choice if you need to set up tracing, do not have an Arize account, or work with sensitive user conversations you do not want copied locally.
