How to use the AnyGen CLI Skill agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The AnyGen CLI Skill is an agent skill that teaches an AI agent to drive a command-line tool called cli-anything-anygen. That tool wraps the AnyGen online generation service, which creates slides, documents, websites and diagrams from natural-language prompts. This guide explains what the skill does, how to install it, how to trigger it, and what to check before you rely on it.
Quick start
- 1Get an AnyGen account and API key. Sign up with AnyGen and obtain an API key, since the tool cannot generate anything without one.
- 2Install Python and anygen. Make sure Python 3.10 or newer is installed and that anygen is available on your system.
- 3Install the CLI package. Run pip install cli-anything-anygen and confirm it works with cli-anything-anygen --help.
- 4Store your API key. Use the config command group to set your key, and config path to find where the settings file lives.
- 5Install the skill ZIP. Unzip the downloaded skill into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/, or upload it under Settings → Capabilities → Skills in the Claude apps.
- 6Ask for an output in plain language. Request a slide deck, document, website or diagram and mention AnyGen so the agent uses the CLI.
- 7Check the result. Confirm the return code, read the JSON output, and verify that the downloaded file exists at the absolute path reported.
What does the AnyGen CLI Skill make the agent do?
The skill gives an agent working knowledge of the cli-anything-anygen command-line interface. The source describes the tool as a stateful interface for the AnyGen OpenAPI, designed for AI agents and power users.
With the skill loaded, the agent can create generation tasks from a prompt, check or wait for task progress, download the generated file, thumbnail images, and manage local project and session state with undo and redo.
The skill also tells the agent to request machine-readable JSON output and to follow basic rules: check return codes, parse stderr on failure, use absolute paths, and verify that output files exist after exporting.
- Create generation tasks from natural-language prompts (task create, or task run for the full create, poll and download workflow)
- Check status without blocking (task status) or wait until completion (task poll)
- Download the generated file or a thumbnail for a completed task
- Keep a local list of task records (task list) and use session history, undo and redo
- Upload reference files to get a file token (file upload)
Install the AnyGen CLI Skill in Claude
Download the skill ZIP from this page. You can then install it in one of two ways.
Option 1: unzip it into your personal skills folder, ~/.claude/skills/, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder if you want the skill only for that project.
Option 2: in the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the ZIP under Skills.
- Personal install: unzip into ~/.claude/skills/
- Project install: unzip into the project's .claude/skills/ folder
- Claude apps: Settings → Capabilities → Skills, then upload the ZIP
Install the cli-anything-anygen command-line tool
The skill needs the command-line tool itself. The source installs it as a pip package named cli-anything-anygen. You need Python 3.10 or newer, and anygen must already be installed on your system.
Once installed, run the help command to confirm the tool is available. The source notes that running the CLI with no subcommand opens an interactive REPL session.
- Python 3.10 or newer is required
- anygen must be installed on the system
- The package is cli-anything-anygen
pip install cli-anything-anygen
cli-anything-anygen --helpAdd your AnyGen API key
The tool cannot generate anything without an AnyGen account and API key. Store the key with the config command group. The source lists config set, get, delete and path. It does not name the configuration key, so check the package README (which the source says is included) for the exact setting name.
To see where the configuration file is stored, use config path.
- config set sets a value
- config get shows one value or all values
- config delete removes a value
- config path shows the config file location
cli-anything-anygen config pathHow do you trigger the skill with a natural request?
You do not need to type commands yourself. Once the skill is installed, ask the agent in plain language for the kind of output you want, and say that it should use AnyGen. The agent should then use the CLI, which the skill describes.
Good requests name the output type, the topic and any reference files. The skill covers slides, documents, websites and diagrams, so state which one you want.
- Make a 10-slide deck on quarterly sales results using AnyGen
- Use AnyGen to generate a one-page document summarising this project brief
- Create a simple website for our workshop using AnyGen and save the file locally
- Generate a diagram of our data pipeline with AnyGen and download it when it is ready
Example: a scripted command workflow
When you or an agent run the CLI directly, use --json before the subcommand to get structured output. Create a project file first, then query it.
The source also shows an interactive REPL, where undo and redo are available for command history.
- Human-readable output is the default; --json switches to structured output
- Undo and redo keep up to 50 levels of history in a session
- Projects are saved and loaded as JSON files
cli-anything-anygen project new -o myproject.json
cli-anything-anygen --json project info -p myproject.jsonWhat people use it for
- Generating a slide deck from a briefing note as part of a recurring reporting job
- Producing a document draft from a set of reference files uploaded with the file upload command
- Running scripted, repeatable generation jobs and keeping local task records with task list
- Building an agent pipeline that calls the CLI and parses its JSON output
Frequently asked questions
Is the AnyGen CLI Skill free?
The source does not state pricing or licence terms for AnyGen itself, so check AnyGen's own terms. The skill and package are listed under the Apache-2.0 licence in the HKUDS/CLI-Anything repository. You still need an AnyGen account and API key to generate anything.
What do I need before I can use the skill?
You need Python 3.10 or newer, the cli-anything-anygen pip package, anygen installed on your system, and an AnyGen API key stored through the CLI config command. Without an API key the tool cannot generate anything.
How do I install the AnyGen skill in Claude?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use, or into a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps you can instead upload the ZIP under Settings → Capabilities → Skills.
Does the skill make the agent run code on my machine?
Yes. The skill runs scripts and uses the network. Generation requests and file uploads go to an external online service, so avoid sending sensitive or confidential prompts and documents.
Why does the agent need JSON output?
The skill tells the agent to use the --json flag because it produces structured output that is easier to parse than human-readable tables. The agent should also check return codes and read stderr when a command fails.
Can I use this without a terminal or a visual app?
Not really. The skill gives no interface beyond the command line. If you want a point-and-click tool, this skill is not the right fit.

Our verdict
This skill suits developers and power users who already have an AnyGen account and want an agent to automate slide, document, website or diagram generation with repeatable, JSON-friendly commands. It is a poor choice if you have no API key, want a visual app, or need to keep prompts and documents confidential, since everything goes to an external online service.
