How to use the Alpha Vantage Market Data agent skill
Updated · written with AI from the project's own documentation and checked against our catalogue data
The Alpha Vantage Market Data skill teaches an AI agent how to query the Alpha Vantage financial data service and write Python that returns stock prices, price history, company fundamentals, forex and crypto rates, commodity prices, economic indicators and about 50 technical indicators. It is for analysts, students and developers who already have, or are willing to get, an Alpha Vantage API key. By the end you will know what the skill does, how to install it, how to set up your key, and how to ask for data in plain language.
Quick start
- 1Download and unzip the skill. Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it so the alpha-vantage folder contains SKILL.md.
- 2Place it in a skills folder. Move the alpha-vantage folder to ~/.claude/skills/ for personal use or to a project's .claude/skills/ folder. Alternatively, upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills in the Claude apps.
- 3Get an API key. Sign up for a free Alpha Vantage key at the support page, or choose a premium plan for higher limits.
- 4Set ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY. Run the read and export commands from the skill so the key is stored in the environment variable for your session.
- 5Install requests and pandas. Run uv pip install requests pandas so the generated Python code can run.
- 6Ask for the data. Describe the symbol, time range and output you want in plain language, and let the agent write and run the request code.
What is an agent skill and what does this one do?
An agent skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file. That file gives an AI agent instructions and examples for a specific task, so the agent can use them when your request matches. This skill's SKILL.md covers the Alpha Vantage API.
Once installed, the agent knows the Alpha Vantage function names and request pattern. It can write Python that calls the API with your key, check for common error messages, and remind itself to cache results because the free tier is limited.
- Stock quotes, daily, weekly and monthly price series, and intraday series
- Options data (realtime and historical)
- Company fundamentals such as overview, income statement, balance sheet, cash flow and earnings
- Forex, crypto and commodity prices
- Economic indicators such as real GDP, CPI, inflation, unemployment and treasury yield
- About 50 technical indicators such as SMA, EMA, MACD, RSI and Bollinger Bands (BBANDS)
Install the alpha-vantage skill
Download the ZIP for this skill from this page and unzip it. Place the resulting alpha-vantage folder in one of two locations: your personal skills folder at ~/.claude/skills/, or a project's .claude/skills/ folder if you want the skill only for that project.
Alternatively, in the Claude apps, open Settings, go to Capabilities, and upload the skill under Skills.
- Personal: ~/.claude/skills/alpha-vantage/
- Project only: .claude/skills/alpha-vantage/ inside your project
Get an API key and set ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY
The skill cannot run without an Alpha Vantage API key. Get a free key from the Alpha Vantage support page (https://www.alphavantage.co/support/#api-key). Premium plans are also available for higher rate limits.
The skill expects the key in the ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY environment variable. The SKILL.md setup prompts you to type the key without it being echoed to the screen, then exports it for the session.
read -rsp "Alpha Vantage API key: " ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY
echo
export ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEYInstall the Python dependencies
The generated code uses the requests and pandas packages. The skill's SKILL.md installs them with uv. Make sure you have internet access to alphavantage.co, because the skill calls that service.
uv pip install requests pandasHow do you trigger the skill with a natural request?
You do not need to name the skill. Describe the data you want, mentioning the symbol, time range and what you plan to do with it. The agent will match your request to the skill and write the code. Include a symbol such as AAPL, a currency pair, or a crypto ticker such as BTC.
Good requests state what you need and what the output should look like.
- Get the latest price for AAPL using Alpha Vantage and print it.
- Pull 2 years of daily OHLCV for MSFT and save it to a pandas DataFrame.
- Fetch the last annual income statement for AAPL and show revenue and net income.
- Calculate the 14-day RSI for TSLA from daily closes.
- Get the monthly USD price history for BTC.
- Get the latest US CPI and the 10-year treasury yield.
What does the code look like?
The skill uses one helper function, av_get, that adds your key, sends the request to https://www.alphavantage.co/query, and checks the response for errors. Each Alpha Vantage function is passed by name, for example GLOBAL_QUOTE or RSI, with its parameters.
The examples below come from the skill. They show the kind of code the agent will write for you.
quote = av_get("GLOBAL_QUOTE", symbol="AAPL")
price = quote["Global Quote"]["05. price"]
daily = av_get("TIME_SERIES_DAILY", symbol="AAPL", outputsize="compact")
ts = daily["Time Series (Daily)"]
rsi = av_get("RSI", symbol="AAPL", interval="daily", time_period=14, series_type="close")Know the rate limits before you start
The free tier allows 25 requests per day, according to the skill. Premium plans have higher limits, real-time data and intraday access. Quota and entitlement messages can arrive inside the JSON response even when the HTTP status is 200, so the skill checks the Note and Information fields as well as the status code.
A short delay does not fix a daily quota. The skill advises caching results and stopping when the budget is used up. Check current limits on the official support and documentation pages before relying on them.
- Ask the agent to save results to a local file so you do not re-request the same data.
- Keep requests small. Fetching many symbols or long intraday histories on the free tier will use up your daily allowance quickly.
Safety notes: scripts and network access
This skill runs scripts and uses the network. The code it writes sends your API key to alphavantage.co as a URL parameter. The skill's helper avoids printing request URLs or raw HTTP exceptions, because those would expose the key. Review generated code before running it, especially if you add your own logging.
The skill does not give investment advice. The SKILL.md says quotes may be end-of-day or delayed depending on your plan, and that you should report timestamps and the adjustment basis. Validate the data against your own checks before using it for decisions.
- Keep your API key in the environment variable, not hard-coded in files you share.
- Confirm timestamps and whether prices are adjusted for splits and dividends.
- Check that the response has the fields you expect before using it.
What people use it for
- Pulling daily OHLCV history for a stock into pandas for a backtest.
- Collecting annual income statements and balance sheet items for a student's fundamentals comparison.
- Building a dashboard that shows forex or crypto rates and a moving average such as SMA or EMA.
- Tracking economic indicators such as CPI or treasury yields alongside stock prices.
- Calculating technical indicators like RSI or MACD from daily closes for a research notebook.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Alpha Vantage agent skill free?
The skill itself is released under the MIT licence. Alpha Vantage offers a free API key with a limit of 25 requests per day, and premium plans with higher limits and more data. Check the official Alpha Vantage pages for current pricing and limits.
What do I need to use the alpha-vantage skill?
You need Python with the requests and pandas packages, an Alpha Vantage API key stored in ALPHAVANTAGE_API_KEY, and internet access to alphavantage.co. The skill cannot run without a key.
How do I install an agent skill?
Download the ZIP from this page and unzip it into ~/.claude/skills/ or a project's .claude/skills/ folder. In the Claude apps, you can instead upload it under Settings, Capabilities, Skills.
Why am I getting a rate limit or Note message?
The free tier allows about 25 requests per day, and Alpha Vantage may return a Note or Information message in the JSON when you hit a quota or lack entitlement. Wait for the daily reset is not a fix; cache your results and reduce requests, or consider a premium plan.
Does the skill give investment advice?
No. The skill is a way to fetch and structure market data. The SKILL.md states that market data retrieval is not investment advice, and quotes may be delayed or end-of-day.
How does this compare with calling the Alpha Vantage API directly?
The skill gives an agent the function names, request pattern and error handling for Alpha Vantage, so it can write the code for you. If you already know the API well, calling it directly gives you full control. The skill does not change the underlying data or quota limits.

Our verdict
Choose this skill if you already have or will get an Alpha Vantage key and want an agent to write Python that pulls prices, fundamentals, economic data or technical indicators. Pick something else if you need high-volume data on the free tier, real-time trading data, or investment recommendations, because the skill cannot get around quotas and does not provide advice.
